2015 Action Movies

January 2015

  • American Sniper
action biography drama history thriller war
    January 16
"Navy S.E.A.L. sniper Chris Kyle's pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and turns him into a legend. Back home to his wife and kids after four tours of duty, however, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind." Starring Bradley Cooper.

  • Alien Outpost
    action sci-fi thriller
January 30 (internet & limited release)
"A documentary crew follows an elite unit of soldiers in the wake of an alien invasion."  All-male cast! Filmed in South Africa.

  • Wild Card
action crime drama January 30 (limited release)
"When a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal skills and a gambling problem gets in trouble with the mob, he has one last play . . . and it's all or nothing." This is a remake—hopefully a faithful one—of one of my favorite Burt Reynolds movie Heat (1986). It stars Jason Statham (more perfect). The Director is Simon West (Con Air, The General's Daughter, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic, The Expendables 2, Stolen), and the writer is author and two-time Academy Award winner William Goldman (and the writer of many greats: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President's Men, Marathon Man, The Princess Bride, Maverick, Misery, and 3 of his screenplays are on the Writers Guild of America, West  101 Best Screenplays list.

February 2015

  • Jupiter Ascending
    action adventure sci-fi  February 6
"A young woman discovers her destiny as an heiress of intergalactic nobility and must fight to protect the inhabitants of Earth from an ancient and destructive industry."  Should have been another great movie from Writer/Directors Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski. It starred Channing Tatum and Sean Bean, and David Leitch of 87eleven was the Stunt Coordinator. It was as visually dazzling as it was disappointing (as an Action Movie)!

  • Seventh Son action adventure fantasy February 6
"Young Thomas is apprenticed to the local Spook to learn to fight evil spirits. His first great challenge comes when the powerful Mother Malkin escapes her confinement while the Spook is away." It looks cool even if the story is a little hokey. Djimon Hounsou is in it, and Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges (whose accent is hilarious).

  • Kingsman: The Secret Service
    action adventure comedy
    February 13
"A veteran secret agent takes a young upstart under his wing." I've been wanting a Secret Service school/academy movie, but when I watch it the kids are too young. I guess I was expecting more 20-somethings. They look like prep school kids. Effects and Gadgets should make it worthwhile. Colin Firth sure looks like he's having a good time. The stunt double making him look good is Rick English (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman Begins.  Director Matthew Vaughan told Firth "“One of the reasons I'm casting you is because you're probably the last person anyone could imagine kicking people and kicking off the villains.” Read this EW article about how much Firth enjoyed his first Action Movie.

  • Batalon (Battalion)
    action drama history
    February 20
"Russia, 1917, WWI. This is the story of the 1st Russian Women's Battalion of Death, formed as part of an ill-conceived propaganda ploy by the Russian Provisional Government in late May of 1917."  Intriguing. $10M budget. Seems like it will be shown only in Russia. Somebody get it for me, please?

  • VANish
    action crime horror February 24
NO. (Terrible title BTW) "A kidnapped young woman is forced on a road trip full of murder and mayhem that takes place entirely in her captor's getaway van." Another Danny Trejo movie. Why do they keep making these movies?! We're—I'm speaking for all women—sick to death of movies where the only way for a woman to be a hero is to be a degraded victim first, or the only way for her to be powerful is half naked! Enough already!

March 2015

  • Chappie
    action thriller
    March 6
    Neill Blomkamp
! Starring Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Sharlto Copley . . . I had you at Neill Blomkamp, right? Plus it seems very Robocop to me.

  • Run All Night
    action crime drama
    March 13
    Liam Neeson
as "an aging hitman who is forced to take on his brutal former boss to protect his estranged son and his family." Sound familiar? Also stars Joel Kinnaman. He's a hell of an actor. I'll see it for him even though it seems like another Taken . . .

  • The Night Crew
    action thriller
January 13  March 17 (straight to DVD)
"Centers on a group of hard up bounty hunters who must survive the night in a desert motel against a horde of savage border runners." Danny Trejo movie :D

  • The Gunman
    action crime drama March 20
    Sean Penn
"A former Special Forces soldier and military contractor suffering from PTSD tries to reconnect with his long time love, but first must go on the run from London to Barcelona and across Europe in order to clear his name." The Director is Pierre Morel (Taken, The Transporter, Transporter 2)—that's awesome, and the movie stars Idris Elba, Sean Penn, Ray Winstone, and Javier Bardem. I confess I laughed at the first trailer and the idea of Sean Penn in this movie and at Javier Bardem as a Bad Ass but the international trailer was much better than the first. The action makes it look worthwhile although the subject matter seems a bit depressing.

  • Tracers
    action
    March 20
Taylor Lautner stars as "A New York City bike messenger wanted by the mafia who escapes into the world of parkour after meeting a beautiful stranger."

April 2015

  • Furious 7
    action crime thriller
    April 3
HOLY CAST! They've added Jason Statham. This is his character's revenge for the killing of his brother played by Luke Evans in Fast & Furious 6. Plus, Kurt Russell, and Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Johnny Strong (rumored), and Lucas Black is back. The movie will be bittersweet over the real-life tragedy of the death of Paul Walker. Paul Walker's brothers Cody Walker and Caleb Walker helped complete his role.  On a lighter note, Noel Gugliemi is in it. You know him, the guy who always has a monkey come out of his butt. LOL

cast of Furious 7

May 2015

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
    action adventure fantasy
    May 1
Another much-anticipated Joss Whedon project, written with Stan Lee. The villain looks incredible! It's one of the top three Boys Clubs cooler than The Expendables (along with The Fast and Furious cast).

  • Hot Pursuit
    action comedy
    May 8
"A police officer and a prisoner are on the run in Texas." What if the police officer and the prisoner were Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara? I don't know that for sure but it's a comedy. It's probably a Buddy Movie where how they don't get along will be funny.

  • Mad Max: Fury Road
    action adventure thriller
    May 15
"My world is fire and gasoline."
Self-proclaimed—it ain't bragging if it's true—"Visionary" and "Mastermind" Writer/Director George Miller revisits his epic triology after a 20-year break and takes us for a 4th wild ride. The trailer is the most exciting thing I've seen in years! The inspiration came from artwork and a script by artist/designer Scriptwriter Brendan McCarthy. The trailer is the most exciting thing I've seen in years.  From the flaming skull logo to the music in the trailer to the oh-so-vibrant colors: vivid blues and intense reds and yellows. So f-ing excited for this one!

  • Cowboys vs Dinosaurs
    action sci-fi
    June 12 May 19
"After an accidental explosion at a local mine, dinosaurs emerge from the rubble to terrorize a small western town. Now, a group gunslingers must defend their home if anyone is going to survive in a battle of cowboys versus dinosaurs." [laughing]

  • Tomorrowland
    mystery sci-fi
    May 22
    Brad Bird
is directing and writing with Damon Lindelof.  It's not Action but it looks so cool, I included it. The trailer is intriguing!

  • San Andreas
    action drama thriller May 29
Starring The Rock! That's all I need to know.

June 2015

  • Jurassic World
    action adventure sci-fi
    June 12
This movie needs no introduction. We'll all be there to see if they use any of the new giant dinosaurs discovered since the last one and how they are going to kick it up a notch this time.  For me, Christ Pratt is very Jeff-Goldblum and should bring the same sense of fun. I'm so excited about this movie, I am not even watching the trailer. Don't want to spoil anything for myself.  It seems from the cast list like there's another "moveable feast".

  • SPL 2: Rise of Wong Po June 18 (China)
With so much fighting talent, it can't fail. Hoping for another classic. Stars Sammo Kam-Bo Hung, Jacky Wu, Tony Jaa, Andy On. Action Coordinator is Dion Lam.

  • Big Game
    action adventure sci-fi
    June 26 (limited release)
A young teenager camping in the woods helps rescue the President of the United States when Air Force One is shot down near his campsite. And the President is  . . . Samuel L. Jackson. HOW I LOVE this trailer. "Action Movie, motherfucker!"

July 2015

  • Terminator Genisys
    action adventure sci-fi
    July 1
The greatest news is that Byung-hun Lee is the T-1000! Okay, I know Arnold is back. Young, older, and old versions. It was pretty cool to see how they pulled that off. We've been waiting for "the war" movie all these years, and I saw glimpses of it in the trailer, but there isn't much of that. Here's the synopsis:  "After finding himself in a new time-line, Kyle Reese teams up with John Connor's mother Sarah and an aging terminator to try and stop the one thing that the future fears, 'Judgement Day'." Don't watch the trailer if you want to enjoy it. It gives away everything.

  • Aurora
    romance sci-fi thriller
    March 22 July 7
"In 2020, super-computer Kronos concludes that human beings are the biggest threat to the planet. 60 years later, Andrew finds himself lost in a world run by machines when he meets Calia, a girl on the way to a place called Aurora." Not tagged as Action but the trailer says otherwise.

  • Ant-Man
    action sci-fi July 17
"Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world." Starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. This movie was great fun.  I saw it twice just to laugh at Michael Peña—He was hah-larious!

  • Pixels
    action comedy sci-fi
     July 24
Giant, pixelated, killer Pac Man. Need I saw more? How about Qbert, Asteroids, Centipede, Donkey Kong? I bet they throw in some Tron, Frogger, and hopefully, my old favorite, Dig Dug.

  • Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
    action sci-fi
    December 25 July 31
    Christopher McQuarrie
—He wrote Edge of Tomorrow, Jack Reacher, Valkyrie, and The Usual Suspects (his first script, which won an Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen—impressive! He also directed Jack Reacher and The Way of the Gunof the Gun, so MI5 will be only his 3rd film! Guess when you're that good, you get the cherry assignments.  Tom Cruise must love him! The Stunt Coordinator is Wade Eastwood. His career is incredibly impressive so this movie's action should be—as all the Mission Impossible movies have been—off the chart and ahead of their time!

August 2015

  • Attack on Titan
    action adventure drama fantasy
    August 1 (Japan)
"Mankind is under the terror of titans, a beast in which feast on human flesh. Eren Yeager, a young boy determined to make change when he himself could transform into one. He is humanity's last hope."

  • Six Gun Savior
action adventure drama April 1 August 1
Eric Roberts and Martin Kove. Now you have to see it, right? "Supernatural Western" Looks "B"-ish but that makes it more appealing to me.

  • Fantastic Four
    action fantasy sci-fi
    August 7
New cast. Described as a re-imagining. I'm game. "Four young outsiders teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy."

  •  Hail Mary: The Drew Pearson Roger Staubach Story
    action drama sport
    August 9
"Catch life. Don't let it pass you by."  Full-length film with poster from 2013 but August 9, 2015 release date . . .

  • The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
    action adventure comedy
    August 14
"In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons."

  • Max Steel August 18
"The adventures of teenager Max McGrath and alien companion Steel, who must harness and combine their tremendous new powers to evolve into the turbo-charged superhero Max Steel."  Here's an exciting glimpse via a fan-made trailer:

  • Hitman: Agent 47  August 21
action adventure drama  "An assassin teams up with a woman to help her find her father and uncover the mysteries of her ancestry." Stars Zachary Quinto and Ciaran Hinds. The second unit director is 87eleven's David Leitch, and the Action Coordinator/Stunt coordinator is Jonathan Eusebio (click on his name and be impressed)—they also worked together on John Wick.

  • Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny
    action adventure drama
    August 28
"A story of lost love, young love, a legendary sword and one last opportunity at redemption." Directed by Yuen Woo-ping, and starring Donnie Yen, Michelle Yeah, and Jason Scott Lee.  This movie will be released exclusively on Netflix and in IMAX theatres. (Weird—it should be a big screen experience, period.)

September 2015

  • Zero Tolerance
    action
    September 1 (UK)
"Two former para-military operatives, Johnny and his police detective friend Peter, search Bangkok to find the killers of Johnny's beautiful daughter Angel—Leaving carnage and retribution throughout city." Double Trouble: Scott Adkins and Dustin Nguyen.

  • Dragon Blade (Tian jiang xiong shi)
    action adventure drama September 4
"Lost Roman soldiers navigate their way through China." Starring Jackie Chan, Adrien Brody, and John Cusack. I think the casting is unusual but the actors are great. Should be different/cool. What do you think? Please tell  me on twitter or Facebook.

  • The Transporter Legacy now The Transporter Refueled
    action crime thriller
    June 19 September 4
"A reboot of the story of transporter Frank Martin." Directed by Camille Delamarre (Camille is not a woman :-( ). The movie stars Ed Skrein who is a really interesting person. He looks/fits the part. Hope he's still a gentleman. That was part of the appeal. Hope he's at least half the fighter Jason Statham was.

  • Echo Effect Chain of Command
    action sci-fi thriller
    September 8
Starring Michael Jai White and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Watch it on amazon.com. You can watch the trailer here. Both sources prohibit embedding :(

  • Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials
    action thriller September 18
Apparently the scuttlebutt was that people were upset that The Maze Runner just sets up this movie. You can't please some people. What else was it supposed to do? I enjoyed the changes between the book and the movie. I'm going to wait to read the next book until after I see The Scorch Trials so the book adds to the movie instead of ruining it for me by comparison (you know you can't help doing that) :D. I was blown away by this trailer. The detail and the action are so beyond the level of the first movie. It makes that movie look 'made for TV'.

    October 2015

    • The Martian
Was action adventure sci-fi now adventure drama sci-fi October 2
Director: Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon This is in NO WAY an Action Movie. In fact, I submitted to edit the listing on IMDb to take away Action and add Drama, and it looks like it was accepted. "During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive." This movie comes off as even simpler than Jurassic World (which I loved anyway). For all the science and technology getting men to Mars, the plot hinges on the fact that we still haven't come up with a space rescue plan (even cruise ships have lifeboats), and people still wander around outside the craft untethered.  Don't even get me started on the tarp! For all my grousing, Matt was entertaining, but Action Movie Freaks will be restless . . .

    • Sicario
      action crime drama
      October 2
Writer: Taylor Sheridan (Sons of Anarchy), Director: Denis Vileneuve (Untitled Blade Runner project).
Like Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was a portrait of the City of Savannah, this movie is a well-written portrait of The War on Drugs. As an avenging (fallen) angel, Benecio del Toro's character "Alejandro" is the central figure (the hitman or "sicario"), despite the large amount of screen time given to Emily Blunt's character—An FBI Agent whose eyes are opened to the 'bullet' (which she dodges at the beginning of the movie) that the war on drugs is. She represents the country (U.S.), reluctant to see the dark side, unwilling to break the law to fight evil. Writer Taylor Sheridan offered Entertainment Weekly this insight  into the philosophy behind Alejandro's story: " 'One of the things that it touches on is everyone is offered choices in life: Do what feels good or do what is good,' Sheridan said. 'You make the wrong choice enough, and then it's not presented again. Then every choice is bad, and each consequence worse. You fall down this rabbit hole where no matter what you do, suffering is on either side.' ” Where you stand on where the line is between right and wrong will be the argument you have after this movie. The literal line between good and evil in this movie is the Mexican border. It is a very unfavorable (but realistic given the Wikipedia summary) depiction of Ciudad Juárez aka Juárez. Sadly, the commentary via Josh Brolin's character "Matt Graver" (CIA) suggests that the best that the U.S. can do is try to control evil by committing evil: This 'line' is the crux of the movie. [ In a deleted scene, Emily Blunt's character "Kate Macer" was to have sex with Alejandro. As if she wasn't dumb enough in the movie (<<SPOILERS>>she almost has sex with corrupt law enforcement character "Ted" played by Jon Bernthal, who then would have killed her if Alejandro hadn't save her), they were going to have her have a sex scene with Alejandro. The U.S. 'in bed with' the Colombians?—a little too heavy on the symbolism. I went in hoping for a strong female role and, instead, they used her being female to represent everything that is weak (in their eyes) and dumb about America in this context. Adding boobs to that would have just been too too awful.  I wish they had cast someone who was physically larger/stronger than Emily Blunt. At least that would have redeemed it a bit. She really was so wrong and out of place in that world—but maybe that was the point. Still BIG and dumb would have worked better to me. When will Hollywood get over making nearly EVERY woman in an Action Movie appeal to male audiences—We females want to see somebody with real physical strength.]

    • Yakuza Apocalypse
      action comedy horror
      October 9
Here's IMDb's Plot Summary, but all you need to know is Takashi Miike directing:  "In the ruthless underground world of the yakuza, no one is more legendary than boss Kamiura. Rumored to be invincible, the truth is he is a vampire-a bloodsucking yakuza vampire boss! Among Kamiura's gang is Kageyama, his most loyal underling. However, the others in the gang view Kageyama with disdain and ridicule him for his inability to get tattooed due to sensitive skin. One day, assassins aware of boss Kamiura's secret arrive from abroad and deliver him an ultimatum: Return to the international syndicate he left years ago, or die. Kamiura refuses and, during a fierce battle with anime-otaku martial-arts expert Kyoken, is torn limb from limb. With his dying breath, Kamiura bites Kageyama, passing on his vampire powers to the unsuspecting yakuza. As he begins to awaken to his newfound abilities, Kageyama's desire to avenge the murder of boss Kamiura sets him on a course for a violent confrontation with Kaeru-kun, the foreign syndicate's mysterious and seemingly unstoppable leader!"

    • Momentum
      action thriller
      October 15
Why is this movie not showing in local theaters as of October 21st?  AND it's not coming up even in the whole state of Florida on Fandango (sigh). Olga Kurylenko is branded on my mind for her fight with a man in Centurion. As slight as her build is, she sold it! And she sold me—I'm a huge fan of Quantum of Solace. Here, she stars in a Heist Movie that has a fantastic looking action-packed trailer.  James Purefoy is an incredible actor as well!  Here is the IMDb synopsis:  "Alex, a mysterious thief, is pulled in by her former partner for one last heist. She quickly finds it was never just about the diamonds. A brutal murder sparks a cat and mouse chase between Alex and a master assassin. Now she must uncover the lies behind the heist and discover the secrets behind the men who have made her a target."

    • Re-Kill
      action horror sci-fi
      October 16
SCOTT ADKINS zombie movie! Yeah, that's plenty for me. The bad news is it's only 88 min. The good news is, it isn't going straight to DVD.  "It's been 5 years since the outbreak that wiped out 85% of the world's population, but the war between Re-Animates (Re-Ans) and Humans wages on. Most of the major cities are still uninhabitable. Within the few surviving cities, the Re-Ans have been segregated into "zones" and are policed by the R-Division of the QUASI S.W.A.T. Unit who hunt to re-kill the Re-Ans in the hope of quelling a second outbreak."

    • Tokyo Tribe
      drama musical sci-fi (t
hey left out action and possibly comedy)  October 23
"In an alternate Japan, territorial street gangs form opposing factions collectively known as the Tokyo Tribes. Merra, leader of the Wu-Ronz tribe of Bukuro crosses the line to conquer all of Tokyo. The war begins."

    • The Last Witch Hunter
      action adventure fantasy
      October 23
Vin Diesel stars in this CGI extravaganza. Looks kind of Underworld-ish to me. Trailer could be deceiving but it looks very bad. I will see it anyway, because Vin Diesel! After all, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters kicked ass!

    • Zero Tolerance
      action crime thriller
UK release date was Sept 1 . . . Hope it comes to the big screen.
Scott Adkins and Dustin Nguyen (I am overdue to add Mr. Nguyen to the Bad Ass list of Action Figures) "Two former para-military operatives, Johnny and his police detective friend Peter, search Bangkok to find the killers of Johnny's beautiful daughter Angel - Leaving carnage and retribution throughout city."

    November 2015

    • Spectre
      action adventure thriller
      November 6
Sam Mendes, who is an amazing Director (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead) is back. Since Skyfall was so visually stunning and so very Bond, I was thrilled! It's really cool how much he gets it. I avoided watching the trailers and I'm so glad I did. #2 gave EVERYTHING away.  .  .

    • Blood Reef
      action sci-fi
      November 11
Subtitled Tropical Hell "A former black ops soldier is kidnapped by a corrupt intelligence agency looking to create the ultimate killing machine." Starring Ving Rhames and Luke Goss. Should be 'great crap'.

    • Bus 657 Heist
      action thriller November 13
"What are the odds of pulling off the perfect heist?" (Heist Movie—w00t!)  "A father is without the means to pay for his daughter's medical treatment. As a last resort, he partners with a greedy co-worker to rob a casino. When things go awry they're forced to hijack a city bus." And that's when the cops (Gina Carano) shop up. Stars  Dave Bautista, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Morris Chestnut, and Robert de Niro.

    •

    • The Kickboxer  City of Blood
      action
      May 15  November 14
Sounds hard core—but never heard of any of the stars . . .

    • Creed
      drama sport November 25
Whether or not this turns out to be an "Action Movie" or not, it will go in my Fight subgenre, and for Action Movie Freaks, it's not to be missed!  Starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, it picks up the Rocky Balboa story and therefore will probably be referred to as Rocky 6. From the trailer it looks like it will stab us in the heart. The character of Rocky is a huge slice of American pie that we just can't stop eating. When Rocky gives that soliloquy about losing everyone, there won't be a dry eye in the house.

    •

    December 2015

  • Close Range

  • Beyond Skyline
    action sci-fi
    December 11
"A tough-as-nails detective embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son from a nightmarish alien warship." Sounds like someone wished Ripley was a man. Stars Frank Grillo, Iko Uwais, and Yayan Ruhian Written and Directed by Liam O'Donnell  (Iron Man 2).

  • Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
    action adventure fantasy
    December 18
Writer/Director J. J. Abrams with Lawrence Kasdan. The original cast is back:  Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill. They are joined by Oscar Isaac (he blazed his way through Sucker Punch, eclipsing everything but the stuntwork), Lupita Nyong'o, The Raid's Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian (holy shit!), and many other cool choices! It's sure to produce some superstars. John Williams will be doing the music again. Nothing could be better.

  • Extraction
    thriller
       December 18
Rated "R"! "A former CIA operative is kidnapped by a group of terrorist. When his son learns there is no plan for his father to be saved, he launches his own rescue operation." Gina Carano, Kellan Lutz, and Bruce Willis star in this "thriller" that is probably an "Action Movie", IMDb just hasn't changed the description yet (surprising how often they do change the classifications).

Simon Rhee is listed as stunt coordinator, and has a really interesting bio.

  • Skiptrace
    action comedy
    December 24 (China)
"A detective from Hong Kong teams up with an American gambler to battle against a notorious Chinese criminal." Directed by Renny Harlin and starring Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville: Merry Christmas!
