India's Daughter

Jyoti SinghThe single most important issue of the 21st Century is global gender inequality. Women's right are human rights and violation of those rights is a human rights tragedy of international proportions. India's Daughter, directed by Leslee Udwin, is one of the most powerful documentaries ever to tackle the subject of the abuse of women and the cultural acceptance and silence on the issue. Focused on the gang rape and murder of a young Indian woman, India's Daughter explores India's patriarchical values and how their unchallenged bias has lead to a widespread epidemic of sexual violence in the Indian subcontinent. Female empowerment through physical action is the credo of the Artemis Film Festival. Sometimes that physical action can be as much in the activist steps we take to fight injustice as it can be in the punches we throw. India's Daughter is a gut-punch to those who wish to ignore the rights of women to their bodies, minds and souls.

Synopsis:  INDIA's DAUGHTER is the story of the short life, and brutal gang rape and murder in Delhi in December 2012 of an exceptional and inspiring young woman, Jyoti Singh. The rape of the 23-year-old medical student by 6 men on a moving bus, and her death, sparked unprecedented protests and riots throughout India and led to the first glimmers of a change of mindset. Interwoven into the story line are the lives, values, and mindsets of the rapists whom the filmmakers have had exclusive and unprecedented access to interview before they hang. The film examines the society and values which spawn such violent acts, and makes an optimistic and impassioned plea for change.

Never Let Go

U.S. premier screening  |  drama thriller

An international action-thriller with Angela Dixon as the kick-ass female lead, NEVER LET GO is tautly written and expertly directed by Howard J. Ford. This exciting UK picture has been nominated for a (British) National Film Award for Best Indepedent Feature. Last year's fest began a tradition of fabulous female action films from the UK and NEVER LET GO continues that tradition. With exotic locales, great fight scenes and a powerful story, this is a must-watch at this year's fest.

Synopsis:  A single mother desperately searches for her missing child in a beautiful, but unfamiliar land, following an apparent abduction. Trusting no one, and stopping at nothing, as she weaves her way through the murky backstreets and barren landscapes, now implicated in the murder of a seemingly innocent man, her connections back in the U.S. begin to reveal that there is much more at stake than first meets the eye.

Crawl or Die

suCCESSFUL MICRO-BUDGET HORROR sci-fi thriller  |   14 August 2014

"The most claustrophobic movie ever made"

While mainstream Hollywood and film studios continue to ignore the power and market clout of women as action heroes, there is a whole movement of female action filmmaking cropping up right under their noses. Writer/Director Oklahoma Ward is a perfect example of that independent female action filmmaking at it's best. With a charismatic kick-ass female lead (Nicole Alonso) who battles her way out of every jam, CRAWL OR DIE has developed a huge international following. More proof that female action films are popular, profitable, and powerful!

Synopsis:  An elite security team assigned the task of protecting the last known woman who can become pregnant, find themselves caught in an endless claustrophobic underground tunnel system. The team soon learns—the real horror is not the unstoppable force chasing them, but the ever-growing-smaller tunnel itself.
