January

  • Underworld: Blood Wars

Stars Kate Beckinsale "Vampire death dealer, Selene fights to end the eternal war between the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her."  This is a jump from TV to the big screen in the Director's chair for Anna Foerster, who was previously 2nd Unit Director and Director of Photography on 10,000 BC, AEon Flux,  and The Day After Tomorrow. She was Director of Photography on White House Down and Pitch Black.  She was also Pytrotecnics Director of Photography on Alien: Resurrection. How cool is that?!

"In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan's attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces." Hugh Jackman is Wolverine for (maybe) one last time—what's not to love?! The character of "Laura" played by Dafne Keen is so intriguing. Love that they have downplayed it a bit in the first trailer. I kind of wish I hadn't seen the 2nd trailer, but, yes, please—fight like a girl!"

  • The Wall
not action?  drama thriller war  May 12
"Two American Soldiers are trapped by a lethal sniper, with only an unsteady wall between them."  Directed by Doug Liman. Stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena.  <-- must be Action :-D

  • Alien: Covenant
    not action . . . horror sci-fi thriller  May 19
"The crew of a colony ship discover an uncharted paradise, with a threat beyond their imagination, and must attempt a harrowing escape."  Directed by Ridley Scott.  Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender are in it . . .  REALLY wish they would give us what we want:  The Colonial Marines.  Haven't watch the trailer because, more and more I find I enjoy the movie more if I see it all for the first time on the big screen.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
action adventure comedy fantasy May 19
"Captain Jack Sparrow search for the trident of Poseidon."  The movie nobody wanted to see, and yet they made another one anyway.  I will probably see it because I love the sea and the special effects so much.  Costumes and makeup are amazing as well!

June

  • WONDER WOMAN (at last!)
action adventure fantasy sci-fi WAR  June 2
    Blurb from IMDb:
"Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior." . . .  Wait, what? That's not a sentence. It continues "When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny." Directed by a woman (as it should be): Patty Jenkins. Gal Gadot kicks it into high gear playing Wonder Woman.  The trailer gave me goose bumps when the rode across the beach.  Amazons, let's ride!

  • The Mummy
action adventure fantasy horror  June 9
"An ancient princess is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension." Stars TOM CRUISE!! Tom has become synonymous with Action Excellence. At the top of his game, his movies are always a little ahead of their time. The Action never fails to deliver.

  • Transformers: The Last Knight
action adventure sci-fi thriller  June 23
"Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth." Michael Bay is making another Transformers movie. I knew he would! It brings back Mark Wahlberg but stars Gemma Chan! How cool is that?! #grrrlpower! Love Anthony Hopkins' narration . . .

  • The Bad Batch
    not action . . . romance sci-fi  June 23
"A dystopian love story in a Texas wasteland and set in a community of cannibals." Stars Jim Carrey, Jason Momoa, and Keanu Reeves, and directed by a woman: Ana Lily Amirpour.  I heard it's bad—there's no way it's bad!
It reminds me of Hobo With A Shotgun.

  • Baby Driver
action crime music thriller  June 23
"After being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail." HOW GOOD DOES THIS LOOK?!

"A dark force threatens Alpha, a vast metropolis and home to species from a thousand planets. Special operatives Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe."  Writer/Director Luc Besson

  • Atomic Blonde
    action mystery thriller July 28
"An undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents." Another "NOC" list movie (non-official cover)? This is being directed by 87eleven's David Leitch. The first trailer really turned me off to this movie. First, Charlize Theron is too thin for this role. She's a supermodel for Pete's sake (sigh). Second, the character is the kind of woman that makes people hate women. It seems like something to turn men on.  I don't know what it will take for me to see this movie, but I am not inclined to give it my money. It has a website: atomicblonde.comI would like to like it, Charlize is selling the severity of the Action, but she's so sexualized, she's bisexual, she dresses 'inappropriately', she's just every man's fantasy of being killed while being turned on (or some such garbage that seems to be the whole reason for Grindhouse). I just want a truly physically strong woman to kick ass in non-revealing clothing while not being 'sexy' by anything overt. Is that too much to ask?!  Guess I'll have to watch to see what kind of 'hero' is she . . . "equal parts spycraft, sensuality, and savagery" ew,no. Written by a man, Kurt Johnstad (this movie has something bad in common, then, with 300: Rise of an Empire, but he also wrote Act of Valor, so something good), this is David Leitch's solo directoral debut.  The trailer couldn't look more professional and the Action, being 87eleven, will surely be top notch. Plus it has an impressive cast. I was really shocked when I first saw the trailer and SO disappointed. This is exactly the wrong direction for me for a solo movie for a powerful woman. A man's take to be sure. I'll keep waiting then, for the 'right' kind of female character. One that doesn't set unattainble beauty standards,  use her sexuality, dress like a male fantasy, or have to sell the Action because she's so slight.

Now, I better shut up because here's some high praise from David Leitch for Charlize's abilities . . .

August

  • The Hitman's Bodyguard
    action comedy August 18
Hollywood's put together Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson for a Buddy Action Movie.  The chemistry will be everything in what looks like a The-Other-Guys-type comedy.  "The world's top bodyguard gets a new client, a hit man who must testify at the International Court of Justice. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial on time." The Director is Patrick Hughes who got picked by Sylvester Stallone for The Expendables 3 with only one full-length movie, Red Hill, under his belt!  Since I liked Red Hill and The Expendables 3, I look forward to this having some really great Action.

  • Birth of the Dragon
    action biography drama August 25
Set against the backdrop of 1960s San Francisco, BIRTH OF THE DRAGON is a modern take on the classic movies that Bruce Lee was known for. It takes its inspiration from the epic and still controversial showdown between an up-and-coming Bruce Lee and kung fu master Wong Jack Man - a battle that gave birth to a legend.

  • The Villainess
    action crime drama August 25
A female assassin leaves a trail of bodies behind her as she seeks revenge.

September

  • Renegades
    action thriller September 1
"A team of Navy SEALs discover an underwater treasure in a Bosnian lake." Stars Sullivan  Stapleton (300: Rise of an Empire). Okay, to be a 'girl' here, again, for a moment. He's great but the scruffy beard and crooked bottom teeth are REALLY distracting from his solid performances and beautiful eyes. Now that I've said that you won't be able to take your eyes off his teeth. LOL This movie looks like fun. It's a Heist Action Movie with Super Soldiers. You gotta love that! Judging by the trailer, the level of  property destruction is off the charts. Plus attitude, gotta have attitude, Boy Toys, and Camaraderie and Dominance (lots of the Action Movie Essentials)!  Looks like a TRUE Action Movie. (If you need more convincing, it's co-written by Luc Besson. Besson knows Action.)  [Ewen Bremner is in it. Every time I see him I hear "The booze are on the grind" (the bulls are on the ground) from The Rundown.]

  • Unlocked
action drama mystery thriller September 1
A CIA interrogator is lured into a ruse that puts London at risk of a biological attack. Stars Noomi Rapace. This is a good movie, but it's not an Action Movie.

  • American Assassin
    action thriller September 15
"A story centered on counterterrorism agent Mitch Rapp."  Not much of a description, but one hell of a trailer! So who is Dylan O'Brien? How did he land this role? He's the Maze Runner kid, and he was in Deepwater Horizon. Everything in this movie will hinge on his character arc. I sure hope they do something with it so we root for him. Are we looking at a possible new Action Figure?! Please say yes, and go on to do more Action Movies, Dylan . . . .
    Michael Keaton
is in this as well—he's as good as it gets for me since Pacific Heights (1990) where I was blown away by how terrifying his subtle performance was. He wasn't even nominated for an award!

  • Kingsman: The Golden Circle
    action adventure comedy September 22
When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, the Kingsman's journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US. These two elite secret organizations must band together to defeat a common enemy.

  • Chasing the Dragon  (Kau Lung Sing Sai) (was called Dragon City and Kowloon Walled City)
action crime history  September 29 (US Limited Release)
    "
A cop assembles a special task force to battle criminals and corrupt cops inside the infamous Kowloon Walled City.
Stars Donnie Yen, who is also listed as "Action Director".  New summary: "An illegal immigrant from Mainland China sneaks into corrupt British-colonized Hong Kong in 1963, transforming himself into a ruthless and emerging drug lord."

October

  • Lone Wolf
    action thriller October 6
"A woman undergoing therapy seeks retribution against a Japanese crime lord while struggling to unravel the mystery behind the deaths of her parents."
  • The Foreigner
action crime drama mystery October 13
A humble businessman with a buried past seeks justice when his daughter is killed in an act of terrorism. A cat-and-mouse conflict ensues with a government official, whose past may hold clues to the killers' identities.  Jackie Chan is schooling the world, as only he can. Playing to his strengths, he proves he's Jackie Chan and you're not.

November

  • Thor: Ragnarok
    action adventure comedy November 3
Imprisoned, the almighty Thor finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home and the Asgardian civilization. This movie was too simple. Action + Jokes. Still, it was enjoyable but it felt like the level of The Waterboy.

  • Blade of the Immortal
    action drama November 3
Manji, a highly skilled samurai, becomes cursed with immortality after a legendary battle. Haunted by the brutal murder of his sister, Manji knows that only fighting evil will regain his soul. He promises to help a young girl named Rin avenge her parents, who were killed by a group of master swordsmen led by ruthless warrior Anotsu. The mission will change Manji in ways he could never imagine. The 100th film by master director Takashi Miike.

  • The Justice League Part One
    action adventure fantasy November 17
The long-awaited DC epic!  For DC fans, it's a win, no matter what. Plus, more Wonder Woman, yay! I enjoyed every minute of this movie. I only wish they given away Aquaman riding the Batmobile in the trailer. WHY do they do that?!

  • Maximum Impact  action comedy November 30
"The agents of the Federal Security Service of Russia and the US Secret Service are forced to work together to prevent a full-scale international crisis."  Director: Andrzej Bartowiak, starring Eric Roberts, Danny Trejo, Kelly Hu, Tom Arnold, and the Iron Chef host Mark Dacascos.

December

  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi  action adventure fantasy sci-fi December 15
Rey develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker, who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares to do battle with the First Order. I thought the opening was incredible and it gave us everything we could want in a Star Wars film. It was much "the same" but I'm not tired of that yet. Poignant to see Carrie Fisher. 40 years! Makes me feel old.

  • Beyond Skyline  action adventure horror sci-fi December 15
A tough-as-nails detective embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son from a nightmarish alien warship.

  • Jumanji  action adventure comedy fantasy December 22
Four teenagers discover an old video game console and are literally drawn into the game's jungle setting, becoming the adult avatars they choose.

  • Tiger Zinda Hai  action adventure thriller December 22
A sequel to the record-breaking blockbuster 'Ek Tha Tiger', 'Tiger Zinda Hai' continues the story of two super spies Tiger and Zoya eight years late. Starring Salman Khan + singing and dancing too, as usual.
