WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE!

Speeding Dating action short movie poster, featuring attractive brunette with long hair in short revealing black dress, against a blood red background with a target scope. She is wearing a red-bordered white nametag with the name EMMA writen in all caps. Her pose is innocent, arms behind her back, but the slant and the slice of the title SPEED DATING suggests action. The tagline reads Surviving one date at a time...

Watch Now: Excellent Action Short Speed Dating
December 18, 2022

This movie is a hilarious 'shorthand' of speed dating and is, entertainingly, long on action. I really enjoyed watching it, more so the second time to further appreciate the direction, the sound, the acting (compliments to the cast), how it plays out, and how the ending is a commentary on the whole speed-dating process (kudos to the writing), bringing it neatly around full circle. The gun play is good, there's close-quarters fighting, and a knife fight. The title includes "Part 1" so we can look forward to more to come! I don't want to give away too much. You should watch.

Writer/Director Jean-Paul Ly (from his IMDb bio) aka "JP" or "JPL" is an award-winning action actor based in London, from Chinese and Cambodian descent. He's also a critically acclaimed action designer, notably on Jailbreak (Best Action Feature winner at 2017 Fantasia Film Fest) and on British action comedy feature Nightshooters (nominated at 2018 Raindance for Best UK Feature). He directed his first 23 min. film, The Division - PoC in 2018. Check out his Action Reel and his Acting Reel. In this movie, he does quadruple duty as a co-Action Director (and he is also an Executive Producer).

Speed Dating has excellent production value, as you can tell by the extensive credits from YouTube, below. The star, Eloise Lovell Anderson can 'handle herself' and exudes a natural intensity. From her IMDb bio: "Eloise is a keen and strong martial artist. She trains Muay Kickboxing, Escrima (Philippine Martial Art) and handles a number of weapons and she does her own stunts." We are drawn in to the character's life and left wanting to see more. Across the board, the cast is very entertaining, doing a great deal with snippets of on-camera time.

Section 8 out today in Limited Release and on AMC+
September 23, 2022

What a cast! Scott Adkins, Ryan Kwanten, Dolph Lundgren, Dermot Mulroney, and Mickey Rourke. Writer Chad Law's (and Josh Ridgway's) latest Action movie Section 8 is directed by Christian Sesma and opens today as a limited release in AMC theaters in Chicago, New York, Glendale, and Rogers MN, and Royal Oak MI. It's also available on AMC+.

The trailer kicks ass! AMC+ has a 7-day free trail, so whadda you waiting for? Mr. Lundgren, Mr. Law, and Mr. Adkins are Executive Producers, so lend your support and they can keep making more Action Movies. Here's the trailer, and please keep reading below . . .

From the opening credits—they sounded and looked like they were inspired by the computer terminal buzzing and beeping in Alien—I really enjoyed it. The violence is so satisfying. The dialogue is great, with lots of funny moments. Ryan Kwanten is very convincing in this; something about him that I can't put my finger on reminds me of Tommy Lee Jones. He's very every man, but at the same time, believable, as the Super Soldier the gang bangers wished they never messed with. He's equal parts sorrow and anger, but a lean, mean, killing machine.

The film is heavy on nudity like a throwback to 80s action, so there's an obligatory strip club scene, plus lots of boobs and buttcheeks if that floats your boat. What floats mine is that a fight with Scott Adkins almost certainly involves air time. He can throw a punch, but he can also launch a knee, or raise his foot to your throat. As much hand-to-hand fighting as went on in this film, and much of it intense, it pales to a throwdown with Mr. Adkins. Just look how airborne is. Reminds me of the "aerobatic insanity" comment about Ethan Hunt in MI:2 (@1:06:50).

Sequel + Spin-Off Announced for The Gray Man
July 27, 2022

LinkedIn News appeared in my feed that "Netflix's $200 million 'The Gray Man,' its most expensive movie to date, has quickly ascended the streamer's global Top 10 list as subscribers watched more than 88 million hours in its debut weekend. While that's far behind opening numbers for 2021's 'Red Notice' (149 million hours) and 'Don't Look Up' (111 million hours), it's still good enough that a sequel and spinoff already are in the works for the Ryan Gosling action [movie]. The news is a welcome counterpoint to the nearly 1 million subscribers Netflix lost in its second quarter." Tech Crunch quoted the Russo Brothers saying "always intended for 'The Gray Man' to be part of an expanded universe."

The Gray Man: Jack Gill Delivers Relentless Action
July 23, 2022

What's all the negative fuss about The Gray Man?! I just don't get why people are hating on it. Sometimes I think some people wait for what 'important' critics think and just hop on. If you can't see for your self that this has everything you're looking for in an Action Movie, get a grip.

It's . . . edge-of-your-seat highest-bullet-count-ever more-explosions most-property-destroyed insane-chases big-guns-you've-never-seen-before bet-Tom-Cruise-AND-Michael-Bay-loved-it . . . F-ING AWESOME! I would call it a major achievement in stunt work and visual effects. I thought it was non-stop excitement. In one word, the action is "relentless" Everyone in it is great. I loved the writing. Seriously, it was super exciting and so satisfying. Don't listen to naysayers, it just might blow your mind. Read how it satisfies ALL my Action Movie Essentials.

The Woman King movie featuring the Agojie warriors in uniform, and armed for battle

The WOMAN King trailer . . . goosebumps . . .!
July 6, 2022

Coming to theaters September 16, 2022! SYNOPSIS: "The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of "General Nanisca" (Oscar-winner Viola Davis) as she inspires the King to take on the enemies determined to violate their honor and destroy their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for  . . .."

The movie is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, writer and director of the widely acclaimed feature "Love & Basketball" that premiered at Sundance in 2000. Gina is a UCLA Film School graduate. She also was a member of UCLA's track and field team, qualifying for the Pac-10 Championships in the triple jump. From her IMDb bio—She is the first Black woman to direct a superhero film, "The Old Guard," based on the celebrated graphic novel by Greg Rucka for Skydance and Netflix. It premiered on July 10, 2020 to record ratings, and was the 6th most popular Netflix film of all-time.

Gina also directed the pilot for the ABC limited event series "Women of the Movement," about Mamie and Emmett Till. , releasing theatrically September of 2022. She is proud to fund a scholarship for African American students in UCLA's film program. (SOURCE: IMDb)   |   Follow @womankingmovie on instagram.

The movie stars:

Viola Davis

Viola Davis

What a role for Viola Davis! The award winning actress is the only African-American to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting: An Oscar, an Emmy, and 2 Tony awards. She is the most impressive actor working today (in my opinion). To take on this role at 56 shows her talent, dedication, and what a powerhouse presence she is. With 4 Academy Award nominations, she is the most-nominated black actress in Oscar history (and she has won many other awards beyond the Triple Crown). Born in South Carolina, she was moved to Rhode Island at an early age. She attended Julliard where her talent was recognized, and she performed off Broadway to critical acclaim. Wikipedia reveals Davis is a second cousin of actor Mike Colter, known for portraying the Marvel Comics character Luke Cage. @violadavis on instagram |  @violadavis on twitter

John Boyega

John Boyega

His full name is John Adedayo Bamidele Adegboyega. If you didn't fall in love with him as Finn in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, don't talk to me. He was great in that role. Born in London in 1992 (30), he's got dual citizenship with the UK and Nigeria (his parents are both of Nigerian descent). He studied acting in school (his first role was at age 9), going on to train with the Identity School of Acting in London. He spoke out  (in Hyde Park) with understandable emotion and passion in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. He said "I don't know if I'm gonna have a career after this." It only intensified our respect for him. @johnboyega on instagram | Lots more about John

LOVE these anecdotes about John from IMDb Trivia

In 2012, John went to a meeting at the Bad Robot studio. While he was waiting in the lobby, he saw J.J. Abrams and Tom Cruise walking out of an editing room. Upon seeing him, Abrams asked "Boyega, right?", which resulted in a small conversation. Abrams said that he was a huge fan of Attack the Block (2011) (John's first film) and added "We're gonna get you in something". However, John was rather starstruck by Cruise and paid little attention to what Abrams just said. In 2014, he was cast in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), which was directed by J.J. Abrams. When Tom Cruise met John again at the Baftas, he asked "So, Star Wars, huh?", to which John happily replied "Yeah, mate".

And this:

While filming Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017), he went to a strict diet and training regime. One day, he went to Carrie Fisher's trailer, telling her that he was fed up with eating healthy. She then offered him some candy that she had stashed inside her fridge. John compared that experience to walking right into a candy store. After that, he would often visit Fisher's trailer for occasional "cheat days".

Lashana Lynch

Lashana Lynch

The other "007" and a striking face with big eyebrows who had "a thing for old wrecks" LOL. Another British actor, born in 1987 (35), Lashana is a graduate of the ArtsEd drama school in London. She made her film debut in 2011 in Fast Girls.  She's a smoking hot Scorpio whose presence crackles on screen. Don't deny the impact she had when you first saw the trailer for No Time to Die (I was disappointed they didn't give her more action, more screen time). She plays Captain Marvel in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (in case you needed a reason to go see it), she was also  Maria Rambeau in the 2019 Captain Marvel movie. @lashanalynch on instagram

Sheila Atim

Sheila Atim, mbe

Sheila made her professional acting debut at "Shakespeare's Globe" theatre in 2013 in a musical she co-wrote with her acting teacher. Sheila plays piano, violin, bass, and drums, and has a kind of deep, smooth, melodic voice, rich without accompaniment like Stevie Wonder. She has won a Laurence Olivier Award twice (Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best Lead Actress in a play). She grew up in London but was born in Uganda in 1991 (31). Her mother moved to the UK when Sheila was just five months old. Sheila graduated with a degree in biomedical science from King's College London and trained as an actor at the Weekend Arts Centre in Belsize Park. In 2019, she was named a Master of the Britist Empire (MBE) for her services to drama.

Adrienne Warren

Adrienne Warren

Adrienne is an American actress, singer, and dancer who made her Broadway debut in "Bring It On" in 2012. Born in Virginia in 1987, she is currently 35 years old. You may have seen her on "Blue Bloods," "Orange Is the New Black," or the "Black Box."

Or, you may have seen her portray Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till (7/25/41-8/28/55) in the ABC series "Women of the Movement" (watch). The synopsis: "Unwilling to let Emmett's murder disappear from the headlines, Mamie chose to bear her pain on the world's stage, emerging as an activist for justice and igniting the Civil Rights movement as we know it today." What a heartbreaking role to take on. It must have been so overwhelming emotional. Mamie Till-Mobley's such a momentous figure in history that shone a spotlight on the shameful and evil face of racist white America. Adrienne also received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical (and a Laurence Olivier Award nomination) for her portrayal of Tina Turner. @adriennelwarren on instagram | @adriennewarren on twitter

Prey, Predator 5 movie poster by Chris Barnes of BRUTAL Posters

PREY Movie Poster: Genius Graphic Design!
June 17, 2022

This is an incredible poster. A seemingly simple design, and yet . . . overall, the clashing color palette (red, blue-purple, lime-green/chartreuse) is so vibrant it reminds us of the first movie's thermal images. The halo of the blue-purple light source behind him could be the moon (danger is more intense in the dark) or it might be light from a spaceship—like there is danger ahead and behind him. The wispy tendrils of his hair in the light suggests the wind or motion suddenly halted.

Obviously, he's being targeted by the Predator's shoulder cannon, aka the plasmacaster, by the three red dots on his forehead. Two of the dots have triangles of red light 'pointing' to them. The third brings your attention to what might be human blood (red) and a spot of the green alien blood. The red concentric circles of the target framing his face also bring your focus to his red eyes where the silhouette of a Predator replaces the pupils (genius), and the red target rings obscure his true eye color. Also, we can see the pinpoint of red from the Predator's weapon in place of where the pupil highlight would normally be (more genius).

Next, the diagonal black streak across his forehead seems like he has been torn open to reveal the night sky and stars, echoed in the war paint across the bridge of his nose (talk about genius!). The red target circles also bring our focus down to his lips. The fact that the yellow-green of the Predator's blood has splattered on his neck and chin, and is reflected in his hair and under his nose frame the mouth. More 'stars' pour from his lips and down his chin, as warpaint, to the green line that leads you to the movie title. The fact that they wrote the word "Prey" in blood seems to suggest not necessarily that the Predator marked him as Prey, but by using green blood hints of a turnaround or reckoning from the universe. He picked the wrong rec room . . .

The liquidity of his eyes conveys so much emotion, it screams "DANGER" like a deer in the headlights, as well as his lips being slightly open (can't you hear his gasp?). The whole thing seems like it captures an instant. It can be fear, sadness, acceptance, and yet, it could also be defiance, strength (of one man and of the universe), bravery (what seems to be the rachis or shaft of a feather marks him as a "Brave"). This poster alone tells a story. Kudos to the artist, Chris Barnes  (@BRUTALPosters)! He has taken this cool idea/original version WAY beyond . . . They should adopt the new one.

Release date on Hulu, August 5, 2022.

Day Shift: JJ Perry Stakes a New Kind of Vampire Movie
June 10, 2022

There's nothing more exciting than practical stunts. This new Netflix Action Movie Directed by JJ Perry (his directorial debut and the 2nd Unit Director directorial debut of Justin Yu, at center above) stars Jamie Foxx, Scott AdkinsSnopp Dogg, and Steve Howey—you know him, the douchey-yet-hilarious "Marcus" from Something Borrowed, a movie worth watching even just for John Krasinski who steals the show . . .

ETHAN          "I won't be doing a lot of writing seeing as how I'm your sexual chaperone with Marco."

RACHEL       "Marcus."

ETHAN          "Markie."

RACHEL       "Marcus."

ETHAN          "Doesn't matter."

Well Marcus, got a serious upgrade . . . (that's Steve Howey to the right of Scott Adkins, Dave Franco, and Jamie Foxx).

Scott Adkins, Dave Franco, Jamie Foxx, and Steve Howey from the set of Day Shift

You know anything JJ Perry does will be legit action-packed. The movie's trailer was shared by Larnell Stovall on Facebook, that's an amazing endorsement and so is having Chad Stahelski praise your work. JJ was honored at the last ActionFest (in 2012) as Fight Coordinator of the Year and he was on hand to accept. Chuck Norris said "nobody deserves it more." Can't beat that!

This Action Movie will be coming to Netflix on August 12, 2022, and . . . is "Rated R for strong violence and gore, and language"! #bringtheaction The IMDb Plot reads: A hard-working, blue-collar dad just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 8-year-old daughter. His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires."

About JJ Perry | Filmography

book cover LIFE OF ACTION by Mike FuryBorn in 1967 in Stamford, Texas (west of Dallas/Fort Worth, 2010 population 3,124), JJ Perry (Jordan Andrew Perry aka "Loco") started his martial arts training at age 7 in 1975. From his Wikipedia Bio:  JJ is a 5th-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, a 2nd-degree in Hapkido, and has experience with all kinds of weapons. He got his black belt for Tae Kwon Do at the age of 12 and competed until he was 24. He was a two-time National Junior Olympian and a Texas state champion.

From the first LIFE OF ACTION volume by Mike Fury, JJ says: "Martial Arts has always been my life and I wouldn't be anything like I am today without it. [M]e and my friends were always huge film fans so we'd play fight all the time and put together little fight scenes. In competition you train to hit as hard as you can and in practicing what is essentially choreography, you train to not hit someone, so it kind of fell right into place. "

From kungfumovieguide.com: "His titles made him eligible for a programme in the US Army, and in 1985, he signed up as part of the 82nd Airborne Corps. Stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. JJ continued to compete in taekwondo while in the Army, becoming a two-time All-Army Champion and later becoming part of the US 1990 Olympic Taekwondo team. He travelled to Korea and trained before eventually leaving the army in 1989 and moving to California."

Besides weapons and martial arts, JJ is also skilled at riding bikes, rodeo, and he does weight lifting. He was the co-founder of Taekwondo West martial arts schools with locations in Inglewood and Venice, California. JJ speaks English, Hebrew, Korean, and Spanish.

On fight choreography, JJ shares (again, from LIFE OF ACTION, which I highly recommend and which now has volume 2):
"[D]oing something different and building an action crescendo, so the action really works in the context of the story, is what I find most challenging." Sure sounds like that is what he's exploring in Day Shift. Aren't we the the lucky ones?!

Love this shot of Scott Adkins and Jamie Foxx.  In case you missed it, check out Scott's "The Art of Action" episode 8 with JJ Perry (video below). What an incredible career! Truly, he was a part of way too many cool movies to list. He tells lots of stories, including some from The Rundown. Also, Scott praises the "violence and viciousness" of JJ's (and Larnell Stovall's) fight choreography.

Black Adam Trailer Opens a Can of Whop Ass
June 8, 2022

This has been a long time coming. It was first announced way back in September 2014, but The Rock was interested since November 2007, according to Wikipedia). The Rock has done SO MUCH since then, and yet, it still seems like a natural progression. He was meant for a role like this, and we've all been waiting for him to done a Superhero costume.

Prey New Predator Movie Comes to Disney+ 8/5
June 7, 2022

Super interested in the fact that the central character is a woman. I'd watch if I had Disney+ but I'm not paying for it. The only way this works is if they make us care about the central character so we root for her. In response to the question "Why do want to hunt?" She replies "Because you all think that I can't." She also says that she is "ready". So bring it on, lets see what skills she has. Really loved the "Boy Scout shit" from the original movie, so maybe—considering the timeline is in the past—that will feature prominently and it should be interesting to see how she fares against a 'superior' hunter. "It knows how to hunt. I know how to survive." "Whatever did this, I can kill it."

Plot: "The origin story of the Predator in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago. Naru, a skilled female warrior, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth." Naru is played by Amber Midthunder. She's described as Native American (Lakota and Assiniboine), European, Spanish, and Asian, but she play a Comanche.

Love the idea that it's set in a time where everyone needed survival and hunting skills. The tomahawk on a rope is bad ass. Also, they show a row of young Indian men. Comanches had a rite of passage for 15-16 year old boys—Wikipedia excerpt:

A boy identified not only with his father but with his father's family, as well as with the bravest warriors in the band. He learned to ride a horse before he could walk. By the time he was four or five, he was expected to be able to skillfully handle a horse. When he was five or six, he was given a small bow and arrows. Often, a boy was taught to ride and shoot by his grandfather, since his father and other warriors were on raids and hunts. His grandfather also taught him about his own boyhood and the history and legends of the Comanche.

As the boy grew older, he joined the other boys to hunt birds. He eventually ranged farther from camp looking for better game to kill. Encouraged to be skillful hunters, boys learned the signs of the prairie as they learned to patiently and quietly stalk game. They became more self-reliant, yet, by playing together as a group, also formed the bonds and cooperative spirit that they would need when they hunted and raided.

Boys were highly respected because they would become warriors and might die young in battle. As he approached manhood, a boy went on his first buffalo hunt. If he made a kill, his father honored him with a feast. Only after he had proven himself on a buffalo hunt was a young man allowed to go to war.

When he was ready to become a warrior, at about age 15 or 16, a young man first "made his medicine" by going on a vision quest (a rite of passage). Following this quest, his father gave him a good horse to ride into battle and another mount for the trail. If he had proved himself as a warrior, a Give Away Dance might be held in his honor.

Girls learned to gather berries, nuts, and roots. They carried water and collected wood, and at about 12 years old learned to cook meals, make tipis, sew clothing, prepare hides, and perform other tasks essential to becoming a wife and mother. They were then considered ready to be married.

Looks like there are some trappers in the movie as well. Hoping for LOTS of Gnarly Kills! It's the holy trinity of Action, Horror, and Sci-Fi. #bringtheaction

Tom Cruise Master Class Cannes 2022
May 18, 2022

"Hommage Á/Tribute to Tom Cruise" It's WONDERFUL that Tom Cruise is receiving this accolade/attention because there is no one who has done more to bring the big screen back post-pandemic. God bless him for his love of seeing movies in the theater!

Tom Cruise is incredible in myriad ways. This fascinating and informative conversation showcases his passion for film. Love that Maverick is doing so well in the Box Office. Can't wait to see it tomorrow! He really should have received an Oscar for Magnolia! There's nobody like him. What a career, what a life! I could transcribe the whole thing but here are the quotes I love most.

"It's a journey. The derivation of art is skill."    "I make my movies for audiences, because I'm an audience, first and foremost."

"All I can do is the best I can do every day, and that's it."  AMEN!

"It was just this constant, lifelong progression that hasn't ended. I mean, I'm still learning, I'm still exploring, I'm still trying to take this art from and push it to where I could deliver what we have with Top Gun: Maverick, with the kinds of things, visually, that we're able to do."

"With cinema, preparation is everything—even if you throw it away, it doesn't matter—you're preparing for something on camera that is immediate, is alive.  Everything I am looking for, I don't want people to see the work behind it. They don't know the work behind it and I don't want them to know them to see it, I just want them to experience the world."

That is the biggest draw for me in movies. The worlds that are created. Take Oblivion, for example, or Live Die Repeat. He does this even with Mission: Impossible because of the team and the places they go. It feels like he's bringing us along.

"It is better to create and even if you fail to some degree, I always tried to walk away with what I learned. It's always better to. It's always better to try than to not do it."

"I give my life to these."

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One Teaser
April 14, 2022

YEAH, I'm not watching. I want to savor every moment on the big screen, but, here you go . . . TC knows Action Movies. There's no question it's going to be good. I REALLY hope they don't kill Ethan Hawke off because I am still pissed about James Bond. Anyway, I have a feeling Maverick is going to sacrifice himself for Goose's son—that's gonna suck. Action Movies should leave you feeling pumped up. No more Drama. Nobody's listening anyhow.

#expend4bles Standee Appears at CinemaCon
April 14, 2022

BleedingCool.com and Screenrant.com both posted this The Expendables 4 "standee" (learned a new word) that was displayed at CinemaCon 2022. Stallone is neither directing nor writing on this one. Screenrant says that Stallone will exit the series with this film and let Jason Statham take over. Dammit I hate to cry at movies. Still pissed about them killing off 007. Does no one get that Action Movies are supposed to pump you up?!  We'll see but the tagline makes you wonder. Whatever the plot, TAKE MY MONEY!!!

Michael Bay directing AmbuLAnce 2022

ambuLAnce Equal Parts Chase and Crazy
April 10, 2022

From the kamikazi drone footage to the color-assault thermals to the intensely gritty flavor of L.A. to Lorne Balfe's hard-hitting score, this IS an ACTION MOVIE. Essentially about one man's desperation to find the funds for his wife's surgery, we meet his crazy 2nd generation bank-robber brother and find out he's no longer rich but still crazy. A Heist-gone-wrong chase ensues . . .

HARD-CHARGING SCORE

In this hilarious promotional video Jake Gyllenhaal reveals that he looked to Michael Bay's energy to create the intensity his character "Danny" needed. With what's at stake, we root for Yayah Abdul-Mateen II's character "Will" as Michael Bay shoots what seems to be a full-length Chase movie. (Michael Bay says it's a Heist movie @7:03 but there's too little on the planning of the heist and, for me, the heist is just the set-up not the meat.) The pace and the tension are heightened by a jarring Terminator-esque and musical score. An hour and a half in, I was exhausted (in a good way) and not just because of the action; a lot of that was owing to the music. It was gratifying that when I looked up the musical score to find Lorne Balf, he was the one who did the score to Terminator: Genisys! In this interview (@7:11), Balf says that's the tricky thing about a movie's theme music "either hits you, or it doesn't." In this movie, it definitely 'hits'. How great that even the score hits hard. Parts of it sounded like a racing sonogram heart beat. It was definitely not the typical bold orchestral feel of the action-blockbuster-series movies (until a little bit at the end). That music, and in so many other ways, it reminded me of The Rock (1996), the 2-dimensional characters for comic relief, but especially the style of the script. They even quote the movie.

Sean Connery quote about Losers from The Rock

BOY TOYS

There's a lot packed into this Action Movie and no shortage of Boy Toys (as one would expect with Michael Bay). The technology brought in splashes of color with thermal vision, like an periodic assault to the eyeballs. It made a nice contrast with all the black and white from the police cars, and there were SO MANY police cars! I heard "200" at one point. This might be the first movie where I thought there should be a police-car crash count. There were black and whites, blacks, and white-on-whites—all Dodge Challengers or Chargers. Never seen white-on-white police cars before. Apparently it's called "ghost graphics" (this car is a Columbia, SC police car). That looked bad ass. Check out the particulars of all the vehicles at Internet Movie Cars Database IMCDb.

"THE POLICE HAVE THEMSELVES AN R.V."

Between the two police "R.V.s" (to quote Die Hard, but you knew that), the color assault thermals, the "Triggerfish" tech, and all the guns, we were already over the top when we get to the tricked-out lowriders (especially the armed 1963 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe). If you love cars, you'll love this movie. The cop cars fall like dominoes! Grand Theft Auto came to mind.

This was the first time I heard of "Triggerfish" (Great name because IRL trigger fish bite hard!). From Wikipedia + Arstechnica: Triggerfish is the tracking of a cellphone by a mobile FBI van (wireless intercept and tracking team) that seeks to locate a cellphone lacking GPS tracking by scanning for its emissions. They are able to intercept a cell phone call by a man-in-the-middle attack if the option is enabled and the user makes or receives a call. Triggerfish can be deployed without the user knowing about it, and without involving the cellphone provider. That may be significant because the legal rulings requiring law enforcement to meet a high "probable cause" standard before acquiring cell location records have, thus far, pertained to requests for information from providers, pursuant to statutes such as the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) and the Stored Communications Act—so this circumvents that.

Other notable Police moments included the S.I.S. chatter (SIS stands for the Special Investigation Section, the real-life tactical surveillance unit of the LAPD) about having a strategy that was part "chess match and cage fight." But don't take yourselves too seriously. LOL

"TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A."

The characters were 2-dimensional in the best way—we're not here for Drama—and yet, it was super dramatic and full of emotion. Gritty L.A. streets and alleys and endless freeways helped to wind up the action. At times it felt, intentionally, like a maze. The traffic, the gridlock, the sense that everyone is always on the move there lent to the humor in the line "Guys, are we on a tour of L.A., or can we get to a hospital?" It was most definitely a tour of L.A. A little To Live and Die in L.A. with the wrong-way freeway scene, and it had to have the obligatory L.A. aqueduct chase (like Terminator 2). It really felt like Bay was making an homage to T2 when the 2 helicopters gave chase while Danny shot at them while hanging out the window. I can't say it matched the intensity but the graffiti with the eyeballs . . . WOW!  It also felt a little like Speed. What they all have in common was intensity, and they never let up.

COLOR ME IMPRESSED

Michael Bay's use of color in this movie as bright as the colors of 6 Underground, and it made me see what his palette is . . .

FIREPOWER

Internet Movie Firearms Database has the low down on all the weapons in this movie but the one that stood out the most was Danny's. It's a Troy M7A1 PDW. Maybe it's just the barrel of the gun, maybe it was the intensity of the character (owing to Jake Gyllenhaal's acting skills) and/or the intensity of the plot, but this is a scary-looking gun. "Michael Bay DRIVES toward to the energy of the scene." Gyllenhaal said. He really took that to heart.

THE SENSEI

In the tradition of Sylvester Stallone and Steven Seagal Action Movies, this movie has Michael Bay taking on causes, like

  • How the U.S. does not do enough for its military veterans, especially in the area of medical benefits
  • How black people have it worse when it comes to health care and
  • Most especially how they are treated differently when they are suspects
  • Or even as humans.

When Will is in custody but wounded, the callousness of the police shows in that they don't immediately get him the life-saving medical treatment he needs.

Bay included a classic Seagal Action Movie moment similar to the pimp-through-the-windshield opening credits of Out For Justice:

DRONE DIRECTING and VR

Here's a look at the future of Action Movies. What's not possible anymore? Creatively, this is mind blowing. ALL the "crazy" comic book angles can come to life.

FULL CIRCLE

Some say the sign of a great movie is they end where they started . . . "Don't let go." In that way, the movie is more about a day in the life of Eiza González's character Cam Thompson. Her character drives a lot of scenes. Would be interesting to calculate if she has the second most screen time (I think Danny has the most for sure, but I could be wrong).

I think the thing I love most about Michael Bay is how much he loves Action Movies. If you're a Michael Bay super fan too, you'll enjoy this . . .

Baytastic ambuLAnce NOW SHOWING
April 8, 2022

Baytastic News! Michael Bay's ambuLAnce is NOW SHOWING. I've really enjoyed his videos promoting the movie on social media. Can't wait to see it (and write about it) tomorrow. I'm still LOVING 6 Underground. WHAT ACTION! I'll be happy if it's even half as much fun . . .

Are you an MMA Fan? Get your favorite fighter's t-shirt!
April 2, 2022

A fellow Action Movie Freak, Graphic Designer, and super MMA fan has started this very cool website selling T-shirts:

TeeKOstore.com

The T-shirts are "made to represent the fighters style and personality, not a company design aesthetic, and are shipped worldwide. Each sale helps to put money in the fighters' pockets whether they are active, injured or retired. Support your favorite fighters!" The prices are reasonable too.

The artwork is excellent . . . Here are some sample of the creative [HOT!] designs . . .

You can just tell that he has a great sense of design. The images are not crazy over-sized like everything seems to be these days. It's a passion project for him, so that's amazing too.  Hope you like the shirts as much as I do!

Spiritwalker Korean Action Movie Poster Spiritwalker Korean Action Movie Poster

Spiritwalker Korean Action Movie Releases 4/12/22
March 21, 2022

IGN debuted the trailer for the South Korean action/sci-fi thriller "Spiritwalker." It will be available exclusively on the martial arts streaming service Hi-YAH! on March 18. On April 12, it goes to digital, Blu-ray, and DVD from Well Go USA Entertainment, or pre-order from Amazon.

The lead actor is the heartbreaker in the beautiful Korean Drama "Chocolate" (still on Netflix), Yoon Kye Sang. The plot summary reads "After waking up from a car crash unable to remember anything about this life, a man beings regaining consciousness in a new body every 12 hours. Now, he must piece together his identity, all while evading attacks from pursuing agents and dangerous criminals alike. But with no memory—and no allies—his time is running out."  It seems a little Inception, a little Crank, and a little Long Kiss Goodnight, maybe even a little John Wick with the dark suit and gun skills. If it's anything like The Villainess, it's sure to pack a punch. I can't wait! I already pre-ordered the DVD!

From Wikipedia:  "Yoon Kye-sang is a South Korean actor and singer. He began his career in 1999 as part of the K-pop boy band god, then left the group in 2004 and pursued an acting career. He made his acting debut in the film Flying Boys (watch here Part 1, Part 2), for which he won Best New Actor at the Baeksang Arts Awards."

Meet the new year: Same as the old year?
January 1, 2022

Are there any true Action Movies to look forward to in 2022? There are! And lots of Comic Book Movies . . .

FIRST, the Action Movies:

January 7 The 355 (PG-13 ACTION, THRILLER) I was tempted to hate on this but after seeing Ana de Armas in Bond 25, I think being beautiful and dressed in a feminine way does necessarily invalidate an action performance. As long as these women don't trip in heels, get their hair in their eyes, or lose a boob or something equally stupid and cliche, maybe they can pull it off as convincingly as Ana. That might sound hateful, especially coming from a woman, but I really REALLY want to see women in Action Movies more properly attired. Maybe it's just me . . . So we have Jessica Chastain (American), Lupida Nyong'o (British), Diane Kruger (German), Penélope Cruz (Colombian), and Bingbing Fan (Chinese) as the top agents from around the world. I like the back story of the "355"/no name. Won't it be interesting to see how these very competent agents play as 'incompetent' women. Careful. At least the screenplay had some female input.

January 7 American Siege (R ACTION, THRILLER)  Action Movie Freaks will see anything Bruce Willis is in. Despite complaining about Action Movies, he's still making them. "An ex-NYPD officer-turned-sheriff of a small rural Georgia town has to contend with a gang of thieves who have taken a wealthy doctor hostage." Looks like a version of Ransom "Give me back my son!" I'm down even though all the action will likely take place in the last 15 minutes.

February 18  Uncharted (ACTION, ADVENTURE) Game movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland. So some fans are fussing about the casting. The movie is "a prequel to the games, starring Holland as a younger Drake, showing us details of how he came to meet and befriend Sully." I think it looks amazing and the action looks just like it does in the game. I love the casting and think they will make it great fun. Surprised to hear Led Zeppelin but love their music! AND . . . by the way "EXCLUSIVELY IN MOVIE THEATRES" so get your ass out and see it on the big screen where it should be seen.

February 22  A Day to Die (ACTION, CRIME) Directed by Wes Miller and starring Bruce Willis, Frank Grillo, Leon Robinson, and Kevin Dillon (he's great!). "A disgraced parole officer is indebted to a local gang leader and forced to pull off a series of dangerous drug heists within 12 hours in order to: pay the $2M he owes, rescue his kidnapped pregnant wife, and settle a score with the city's corrupt police chief, who is working with the gang leader and double-crossed him years ago."  Frank Grillo = Action :) Looks "gritty" and good. Hope the action is not sacrificed for the sake of the drama. Here are some behind the scenes shots:

March 25  The Lost City (ACTION, ADVENTURE, COMEDY, ROMANCE) This is so Romancing the Stone! It looks kind of stupid but stupid can be really funny. If I laugh 'til I can't breathe once, that's all I am looking for. I love Sandra Bullock and I love Channing Tatum. The rest is gravy.

March 25  Everything Everywhere All at Once (R ADVENTURE, COMEDY, SCI FI) What's this doing here with the Action Movies you ask. Michelle Yeoh. Watch the trailer and tell me you don't agree. She's killing it!

April 8 AmbuLAnce (R ACTION, CRIME, DRAMA) Directed by MICHAEL BAY! #shutupandeatyourawesome

April 8 Bullet Train (ACTION, THRILLER) Directed by David Leitch, and starring Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Michael Shannon, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Bad Bunny (!). Based on a bestselling novel of the same name by Japanese author Kõtarô Isaka, it is described as a dark, satirical thriller that follows the perilous train ride of five highly motivated assassins. This will hinge on great performances. I hope it's a great showcase for the talents of David Leitch and Brad Pitt. Be interesting to see how Sandra Bullock fits into this.

Brad Pitt and David Leitch Bullet Train movie

April 22 The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent  (ACTION, COMEDY)  Nicolas Cage!

April 22 The Bad Guys  (PG ACTION, ANIMATION, COMEDY)  There is tons of Action in this movie. Looks like great fun.

April 22 The Northman  (ACTION, ADVENTURE, DRAMA)  Everyone's talking about Alexander Skarsgard's already perfect physique. Anya Taylor-Joy is in this (The Queen's Gambit). She's so anime looking to me. And, she was born in MIAMI! (as exotic as this sounds, this is #soMIAMI "Anya was born in Miami, the youngest of six children. Her father is Scottish who was born in South America, and her mother is Spanish-English who was born in Zambia in Africa, to an English diplomat father and a Spanish mother from Barcelona."

April 29 Memory  (ACTION, THRILLER)  Starring Liam Neeson, Guy Pearce, Ray Stevenson, Louis Mandylor, and Monica Bellucci. "An assassin-for-hire finds that he's become a target after he refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization. A remake of the 2003 Belgian film 'The Memory of a Killer'."

May 27 Top Gun: Maverick  (PG-13 ACTION, DRAMA)   . . . TOM CRUISE The Movie Star, the Man! A sequel was inevitable. Everything Mr. Cruise does is quality so I know it will deliver.

May 27 now March 24, 2023  John Wick: Chapter 4—Hagakure  (ACTION, CRIME, THRILLER)  Delayed . .  Bound to be worth the wait but you've got to wonder where they can take the action. Wondering if the word "hagakure" was added or dropped. This very interesting article by Screen Rant has some insight into what it means. "Hagakure is a Japanese term and refers to The Book of the Samurai. The phrase can mean either "In the Shadow of Leaves" or "Hidden Leaves." Read more . . .

June 6  The Wrong Place  (THRILLER)  Bruce Willis movie. "A meth amphetamines cook hunts down the former Police chief of a small town in order to silence him before he can deliver eyewitness testimony against his family, but ultimately finds himself up against more than he had bargained for."

June 10 Jurassic World Dominion  (PG-13 ACTION, ADVENTURE, SCI FI) I guess we never tire of dinosaur movies. I even watched Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous on Netflix. "Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard star as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing and are joined by Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum, who reprise their roles as Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Alan Grant, and Dr. Ian Malcolm." Aaaah, at last a return to sarcasm. Trash talking is one of my Action Movie Essentials!

June 17 Buzz Lightyear  (PG-13 ACTION, ADVENTURE, SCI FI) Surprisingly, the back story we didn't know we really wanted.

September 30 Mission: Impossible 7  (ACTION, ADVENTURE, THRILLER)   . . . more TOM CRUISE Mission: Impossible movies overtook Bond for me a few movies ago. Tom just gets it. He understands the assignment and always exceeds expectations. M:I 3 was even ahead of its time. The stunt work is always without equal. Gotta love it!!!

December 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 . . . December 18, 2020, December 16 Avatar 2  (ACTION, ADVENTURE, SCI FI) Actors were filming a lot underwater and holding their breath for Tom-Cruise-like lengths. Not happy that Stephen Lang's character Miles Quaritch is the villain (should be the good guys), but glad they realized he was great and brought him back from the dead!

Comic Book Movies

►January 28  Morbius  (PG-13 ACTION, ADVENTURE, DRAMA) Jared Leto. Enough said.

►March 4  The Batman  (ACTION, CRIME, DRAMA, MYSTERY) What is there to say about YET ANOTHER Batman movie? Robert Pattinson's teeth look funny. He can't be worse than Christian Bale (not a fan). Here's an interesting Trivia notes from IMDb: "To prepare himself for the role, Robert Pattinson wanted to absorb as much of the characters legacy as possible and read loads of different Batman comics from different eras in the months before filming started." Commendable!  And . . . "t was confirmed early on that Robert Pattinson signed a three picture deal, meaning this is to be the first film of a new Batman trilogy."

►May 6  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness   (ACTION, ADVENTURE, FANTASY) Directed by Sam Raimi

►July 8  Thor: Love and Thunder  (ACTION, ADVENTURE, FANTASY)  From IMDb Trivia: "Chris Hemsworth, on his 8th time playing the character of Thor, achieved his biggest physique ever for this film—getting up to 231 pounds for the role. His longtime trainer, Luke Zocchi said, 'He is in phenomenal nick. He's the biggest he has ever been. He's the heaviest he's ever been.' This extent of musculature required Hemsworth to eat at least 8 times a day during the entire duration of filming just to maintain all the muscle mass he had acquired. " Oh yeah, he's jacked!

Chris Hemsworth jacked for Thor: Love and Thunder

►July 29  Black Adam  (ACTION, FANTASY, SCI FI) Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson! "Plot unknown. A spin-off from 'Shazam!' centering on the film's anti-hero." In this first look video, Pierce Brosnan says "Nothing compares to this."

►October 7  Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Part One  (ACTION, ADVENTURE, ANIMATION)

►November 4  The Flash  (ACTION, ADVENTURE, FANTASY)

July 8 now November 11  Black Panther: Wakanda Forever  (ACTION, ADVENTURE, DRAMA, SCI FI, THRILLER)
Rest in Peace Chadwick Boseman . . .

►December 16  Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom  (ACTION, ADVENTURE, FANTASY) Aquaman gets to be Jason Momoa again. And the suit is dark now :(  SMH sigh . . .

Closing out 2021: Where were the Action Movies?
December 31, 2021

I can't let 2021 go without sounding off on my INCREDIBLE disappointment in James Bond 25 and Matrix 4.

First, No Time To Die—apparently there was time. Not only did they kill off James Bond, but also Felix Leiter. I was so pissed when I accepted they really were going to kill him that I wanted to walk out, but what kept me in my seat was if maybe they would un-do it somehow in true Bond fashion. I mean REALLY . . . THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE ASSIGNMENT. After Covid-19 and the horrible year plus we had, and all the time we waited for our feel-good, escapist, annual "action injection" what we got was the movie nobody wanted to see or will ever watch again. The only redeeming thing for me was the unexpectedly competent performance of Ana de Armas's character who went from eye candy to full-force lethality at high speed.

Ana de Armas in James Bond 25, No Time to Die

As for The Matrix Resurrections, it was a turd. Not only was it boring all the way through and left me shifting in my seat, but apart from two moments, there was not enough there to keep me from almost nodding off repeatedly. SUCH a disservice to the masterpiece that the original The Matrix is. At the end, I was sure I would have wanted to vomit if they put rainbows in the sky. Even as a woman, all that Trinity in the driver's position, Trinity with the power of The One, etc., being shoved down our throats was a bit much. They also did not understand the assignment. And thanks to Franchise Fred [Topel], I learned the word "metacommentary" but that wasn't enough to make it worthwhile for me, even when I really wanted to be put back in that world. It sucked! It sucked BAD!!! It felt like they mashed together what they thought audiences would want to see/be entertained by. The two great moments for me were stuntwork:

1) This fluid (and close than it looks here) leap over the car by Jessica Henwick's character [Fight Team/Stunt Actor: Captain/Stunt Double Jade-Eleena Dregorius] was impressive.

Jade-Eleena Dregorius and Jessica Henwick stunt in The Matrix Resurrections

Here's Jade's 2017 YouTube Stunt Reel (she has another more recent video on IMDb). Love the ending!

 2) And a motorcycle riding up a car was cool . . . Two Stunt Coordinators are listed Jonathan Eusebio and Scott Rogers, and no Second Unit Director.

Nomad Stunts Founder has Praise for Women in Stunts
December 20, 2021

Tomiris movie posterI became a huge fan of Nomad Stunts after watching "[The Legend of] Tomiris." It won the 2020 Taurus World Stunt Award for "Best Action in a Foreign Film."  This is just an excerpt from a December 17, 2021 article in Esquire Magazine, Kazakhstan written by Roman Raifeld: "Zhaidarbek Kunguzhinov about injuries on the set, being in demand abroad and discipline in the family."

At Nomad Stunts you have not only men, but also women ...
Yes, we have 12 girls, and many have been working for a long time.

How do you work with them?
Everything is like in the army: we do not divide into women and men, but each does his job. All train the same, there are no indulgences.

Is your approach: should a man be stronger by default?
Yes, that's right. Our girls fence, work on horses, fight, fall, do the quickdraws on the cables—they do practically the same thing as the guys. But, for example, we don't hit girls with cars—we only take guys for such scenes. There is always a woman in some group—at least one—very strong. And we have a team, she surpasses some of the guys. But naturally women are still different. Take, for example, the way they drive a car: be more careful, because they have a maternal instinct. During a fight—there are very strong ones, even a Jiu-Jitsu champion—but some maternal instinct does not let her go beyond a certain line, she begins to doubt. If men go for a trick, sometimes even knowing that they will break something, then the girls instinct does not allow it, stops. It's okay, it's just nature.

Here I have a manager, Evgenia Li—she is better at planning, her brains work better than the guys, she is more stable and obligatory than the guys. No matter how much I recruit managers and assistants for the guys myself, the girls work better. I still cannot replace Evgenia with any guy. Yes, girls are trying to dominate, but in general, they did not take away the work of stuntmen from men. Once we worked with Natalie Portman in Ireland, there was a group of women stuntmen, out of ten we were able to select only one, among the guys out of ten you can select five. There are, of course, some unique women who can easily replace 5-6 men.

Update From: Dayna Grant
August 19, 2021

What a relief to see this glowing report from Stuntwoman extraordinaire Dayna Grant:

I am week 5 after brain surgery and doing extremely well thanks to everyone's help and support

I had an appointment with my surgeon today and I am cleared to start doing basic stuff again, only 'cause I'm experienced on an amazing horse he has given me the ok to go ahead to get on my horse. This has made me extremely happy. My day is jam pack filled with rehab.

I am feeling really good and I think I am starting to get a small amount of sight back in my left eye. I try to keep my eye patch off but sometimes I need it on to give my eye a break (it's trying really hard) "You can do it left eye!" Every day I feel an improvement and I'm gonna come back better than before any of this. I have found meditation and a huge appreciation for life and the amazing people in this world . . . and what is truly important to me.

I have turned a negative into a positive and for the first time in I don't know how long I have been able to focus on my health. So I want to thank you all for following me on my journey, still a way to go but it's a happy journey thanks to you all. Oh yeah and my surgeon couldn't believe I haven't been on medication for the past month, he said I was the picture perfect patient//

Stunt School Update: I try my hardest to make it along to see everyone's happy faces at the workshops, sometimes it will take a week of rehab (after) to be able to make it back again to see everyone . . . but it's worth it. January 2022 is the next time I'm allowed to drive a car again in public. I have an eye specialist appointment soon but due to Covid restrictions that probably won't happen. I owe it all to nutrition, positivity and the oxygen chamber and I wouldn't have had any of this without you all♥♥

TAE Live The War Room: YouTube Series
July 5, 2021

Just discovered The Action Elite is doing live YouTube Shows (I plead full-time job + college courses).  It was really enjoyable! Eoin and Jeff Turner of Action Reloaded discussed the Escape Plan Trilogy in this episode.

"Who is this lunatic?" Jason Statham stars in Wrath of Man
May 2, 2021

2021 is looking up!  Release Date:  May 7, 2021.

WRATH OF MAN is an armored car revenge movie starring Jason Statham (and a whole lot of guns) as an armored car guard with a problem. Some armored car thieves killed his son—big mistake. Set in L.A., directed by Guy Ritchie, and also starring Josh Hartnett, Scott Eastwood, Andy Garcia, and Holt McCallany, this movie looks like a winner. Please take my money.

The guns are sure to be on IMFDb.org, the Internet Movie Firearms Database (they have their work cut out for them) as they featured in in their latest newsletterr.

The Art of Action: Iko Uwais
February 14, 2021

This incredibly enjoyable series features Iko Uwais next. So glad he learned English. I first heard of him with Merantau at ActionFest 2010, when I wrote:

"What a surprisingly moving Action movie. This would be a wonderful drama if not for the remarkable fighting skills of Iko Uwais! The plot reminds us how small the world is and how we are all the same. Compassion and heroism. It will make you cry, girlie man! Merantau showcased Uwais's Silat skills, can't wait to see more from him."

The whole festival was abuzz about how incredible he was/is. It was a TIFF crowd as well so that says something. Merantau is one of the best films I've seen. It should be required watching for humans. The Raid films cemented his place in Action Movie history, and he's been fire in every role. Can't wait to watch this episode of The Art of Action.

Monsters of Man "Catch me if you can."
February 7, 2021

Directed by Mark Toia, and Written by Jeff Hand (screenplay) and Mark Toia (story), this Action SciFi Horror movie is described on IMDb as: "A US weapons manufacturer tests its 4 killer robots on heroin producers in the Golden Triangle in SE Asia. It goes haywire." You had me at Action SciFi Horror, but then "robots" . . . OH YEAH! Of course, I immediately thought The Terminator meets Predator, with a little of The Condemned. This is Mark Toia's first IIMDb credit, and he is also listed as the Producer and Cinematographer. What an epic start! His company website Zoom Film & Television showcases his career in commercials. No wonder this movie looks so polished.  Here's his bio from the movie website:

"Originating from a very successful career as an advertising photographer, Mark Toia was encouraged into directing TV commercials by his clients. They desired to bring his exceptional photographic eye to the small screen. 20 years on, Mark has become one of the world's most sought after international directors and is now receiving scripts from Hollywood's finest. His ability to deliver a stunningly artistic story full of drama, to shooting a fast and furious action piece is only a glimpse into what he can deliver. Toia's legendary cinematography skills, vast post-production VFX knowledge, combined with his ever-evolving mind and machine-like work ethic make him the perfect choice for any production. His passion is to capture incredible performances within an image that emotionally compels. This combination puts him squarely at the forefront of today's film and television industry."  Bad ass.

"The ad game has honed me into a bit of a Swiss Army Knife."

You're in, right?  Storyline by Mark Toia: "A robotics company teams up with a corrupt CIA agent undergoing an illegal, unsanctioned military operation. Dropping four prototype robots into a suspected drug manufacturing camp in the Golden triangle that no one will miss. The mission is to prove the robotics company is worthy of winning a lucrative military contract. Six doctors on a good cause witness the brutal slaughter of an innocent village, and are forced into a deadly game of cat and mouse as they become the new targets." The mice are REALLY stupid. Why do people always move too slowly AND give their position away every chance that arises?

It was released worldwide on December 8, 2020 on all popular platforms to rent or buy https://www.monstersofman.movie/. I watched on Amazon (purchased not rented). And, it stars Neal McDonough! I have to say ALL the acting is excellent. Great casting as well.

There is some cool merchandise (I got the larger image robot tshirt, so cool.). I really hope Mark Toia gets backing to do more Action Movies, because if this is any indication, there'll be no 'catching' him!

Jacked Up! on Podcasts :-)
January 18, 2021

2020 gave me the experience of being on 2 podcasts. The first one already aired. The second one is airing on 1/27.

  • The House That Screams: A Horror Podcast 9/16/2020
The first time was a Horror Movie podcast with Robb Antequera also known as The Cinema Drunkie twitter: @TheCineDrunkie, like him on Facebook. He also writes for UltimateActionMovies.com UAMC, and has great taste in Action Movies twitter: @actiondrunkies. Robb invited me to Candy Allison's "The House That Screams: A Horror Podcast" (twitter: @finalgirlcandy, her blog: | candycoatedhorror.wordpress.com) discussing the cult classic Bram Stoker's Dracula. I love that movie! This group session was fun. They've been doing it for a while and have a great dynamic. I tried to fit in, and generally not make an ass of myself. You be the judge. When the time came I plugged Aramis Gutierrez's @anti_cgi on instagram because, being horror fans, I thought they would be more likely to follow him than follow me. He now has 96.9k followers! He works with my brother and is 4-alarm-fire fun and a very fine, fine artist. Plus he watches a LOT of movies.

  • The Jacked Up Review Show Podcast 1/27/2021
My second podcast experience was being very kindly asked by Cameron Sullivan, host of "The Jacked Up Review Show Podcast" (like it on Facebook / @CamSullyFilm on twitter and @camsullyfilm on instagram) to participate in reviewing the Jeepers Creepers series and the Final Destination series—Again, horror movies, but I happen to LOVE both these series and Final Destination 2 has that incredible crash sequence. Cameron is a super knowledgeable, super nice, incredibly polite and patient guy who is an encyclopedia of film! I've yet to meet anyone who loves film more or knows more (well, maybe Colin Geddes). Truly impressive. It was so much fun, I think we talked for 4 hours. I don't know how he's going to edit it down. Hope he takes out me giving him a hard time about not liking Action Movies more ;-). I also don't know how I ended up having my first podcast, and my second, be about horror instead of Action Movies. But horror was my first love, so . . . it's all good. Here's all the information Cameron posted about the podcast: The episode will air on 1/27. He writes: "On Jan. 27, ActionMovieFreak helps me conclude the discussion for the action-horror blockbuster sagas: Jeepers Creepers and Final Destination." Here are the platforms The Jacked Up Review Show Podcast appears on:

  • iHeartRadio
  • Podbean
  • Spotify
  • Apple Podcastss
  • RadioPublic
  • Overcast (requires login)
  • Google Podcasts
  • Anchor

After these two podcasts, I chickened out of talking about Predator with Robb. I don't think Podcasts are for me . . .

Monster Hunter: Gimme More!
December 26, 2020

You don't have to twist my arm to go see anything with Tony Jaa or Milla Jovovich. Put them together and BAM!

Monster Hunter was cool and fun. Visually, it was a little Transformers DOTM desert scene, a little Stargate, a lot Pitch Black, a little Starship Troopers, and a little Dune mixed in, and, maybe, some Mortal Engines (but I didn't see that movie).

What surprised me most was that Milla made it believable that she could take on Tony Jaa (!). Not kidding. The fight scenes were surprisingly believable. I mean, it's TONY JAA! Loved the supporting cast, including: Ron Perlman, T.I., Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, and Miami boy (North Miami Beach) (he appeared in my favorite F&F, 2 Fast 2 Furious) Jin Au-Yeung.

I'm hoping for a series. Love "bad-ass team" movies.

From IMDb Trivia:

The premise of the movie involves an Alpha Team (led by Milla Jovovich) looking for their colleagues of Bravo Team who have gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Alpha Team subsequently ends up in a place full of monsters where they find most of their Bravo Team colleagues already dead. This is almost the exact same premise as the classic video game Resident Evil (1996), with soldiers replacing a special police team, insectoid monsters substituting for zombies, and a parallel world instead of an old mansion. Paul W.S. Anderson, screenwriter/directer of Monster Hunter, also wrote and directed Jovovich in Resident Evil (2002), as well as the last three installments of Resident Evil, which were big screen adaptations of the eponymous game series. Monster Hunter is also an adaptation of a popular game series that started with Monster Hunter (2004).

Wonder Woman 1984
December 26, 2020

If you haven't seen this on the big screen, what are you waiting for?! It's WONDERful. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

This movie surprised me with the depth of its emotional appeal and some pretty spectacular action moments for Wonder Woman. Spoiler: The winged gold suit ascent really took my breath away. I didn't expect to feel so proud of how 'good' she is. It was the message we really needed to hear RIGHT NOW. Without saying anything more about it, one more ENORMOUS spoiler . . .

The cameo at the end after just a few credits really hit me 'in the feels'.  I watched the 1975-79 Wonder Woman TV show when I was 15-19, and it's hard to say how much Lynda Carter/Woman Woman means to girls because there was so little out there then in the form of powerful role models. All that pride from the '70s and all that women have lived through since just so unexpectedly came at me all at once.

Of course, I highly recommend this movie and will watch it over and over for years to come. Hats off to Patty Jenkins for the writing (story by) and directing. Gal Gadot looked more muscular to me and did a great job selling the action. She IS Wonder Woman to me now and has earned that place (even though I kicked and screamed at first wanting it to be Gina Carano).

Hats off to all the Amazonian "Competitors" (in bold L-R top to bottom):

plus: Miranda Chambers, American Ninja Warrior Jessie Graff, Jade Johnson

And the "Amazon Athletes": Mikayla-Jade Barber, Candice Carbinee, Donna Forbes, Karis McCabe, Chantal Nell, SaskiaNeville, Jenny Pacey, and Katherine Pickering. And the stunt women listed as "Competitor", "Amazonian", or "Amazon": Betty Adewole, Samantha Alleyne, Claire De Boer, Sarah Exall, Camilla Roholm, Ella Walker, and Rosanna Walls.

Wonder Woman 1984 Amazonian Competitors Briony Scarlett, Moe Sasegbon, Lilly Aspell, Bronte Lavine, Dayna Grant, and Gwendolyn Smith

Surprising Depth in Action Short Film OFFICER DOWN
November 28, 2020

Officer Down (:18 min) is a taut Action Short that, in the words of Writer/Director Simon Pearce, follows a young British police officer ("Alex Trent"), who finds himself cut off and trapped during civil unrest and has to fight for his survival. In doing so, he also has to overcome his own fears and bias, in order to possibly make it out of the situation alive.

Officer Down action short film horizontal movie poster

He continues "When I set out to make this film, I was very keen to make something that felt very real  and visceral. And to that end, something that wasn't just a typical Action Movie where it was as simple as good guy versus bad guy. I really wanted to ground the film in the world we're in today, and to have some moral complexity within the characters." Mission accomplished, thanks in no small part to the script with co-Writer Tommy Draper.

Taking Sides

The lead 'villain's' remark "You're out there now, armored up, hurting, detaining people because they don't share your ideals" particularly resonates given the state of policing in the U.S., which has been exposed as pervasively the white supremacist state-sanctioned killing of black people.#justmyopinion. "Elijah" (played by Ben Turner) pointedly asks Officer Trent if he's prepared to do what is necessary. I often wonder on what side the U.S. military will fight if the level of racism, hatred, and corruption in the police force places the police on the side of neo-Nazi militias who seek to start another Civil War.  Am I reading too much into it? Maybe, but it's to the film's credit that these connections were made in my mind. Also, there comes a point where Officer Trent is faced with a choice, and what he chooses to do emphasizes that we all have free will outside of the constraints of society, or our jobs, or belief system, whatever, to do "the right thing" in the moment . . .

Officer Down action short film starring Ben Turner as Elijah

Packing Punches

Office Down action short film Officer Alex Trent played by Martin DelaneyAs well as Thought, this Short packs a lot of Action into a neat and beautifully shot package. The Director of Photography is Phil Méheux, BSC (Casino Royale, The Saint). We know what the main character (Officer Alex Trent played by Martin Delaney) is there to do, and the overall excellent acting engages us in his efforts to stay alive.

At the start, the plot fast forwards from when Officer Trent enters an abandoned "old sports hall" building with other officers, to the point at which he winds up alone without any help. During the movie, he narrowly escapes death several times. The film's major fight scene, midpoint, is ferocious, and even has what I thought was a Gnarly Kill, but no spoilers. Seriously, the sound effect for that will leave you wondering how they did it. It hurts to watch.

Simon Pearce as Director does an excellent job, and the acting is first rate all 'round. The whole movie is quite impressive. From his website, Simon's bio says that he:

Has been making films since he first picked up the family video camera in his early teens. He began his career in a range of on-set roles, such as production and video assistant, self-shooting camera operator, and finally going on to become a freelance editor, for the likes of the BBC, Animal Planet, and National Geographic. He had the opportunity to direct his first feature SHANK in 2008, a gritty, coming-of-age drama set in his hometown of Bristol. The film went on to play in over 60 film festivals around the world and was released on DVD in the UK and US in 2009. In 2015 his second feature was released, Judas Ghost, a supernatural horror filmed in a single location and written by New York Times best-selling author Simon R. Green. He continues to develop short and feature length titles, with a focus on commercial, genre projects.

I think Simon Pearce has a brilliant directing career ahead of him, just off this film alone. His bio doesn't include Horizon (2015 TV series) which looks really cool. He's got such an extensive, well-rounded film background with credits in Editing, Producing, Directing, Acting, Camera + Electrical, Cinematographer, etc. Also, with a lot of film experience (Acting, Directing, Writing), is the Producer Emily Haigh who played Georgiana Reed in 2011's Jane Eyre, and has no fewer than 10 projects she's appearing in (as Actress) in the works for 2020-2022.

Everyone in the film was excellent! The main players were:

Hats off to the Stunt Team:

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 14 Dolph Lundgren
September 8, 2020

Covid-19 has us all on Zoom and conference videos, but this one, really hits home because who could have imagined that Scott Adkins and Dolph Lundgren would be 'sitting around' so to speak, and let us in on their video chat?! This one went so fast for me even though it's nearly an hour. Dolph Lundgren is way more calm and down to earth than I imagined he would be. Laid back, I guess is what I mean. Again, Scott shows his appreciation for the body of work by his guest. Will be interesting to see what other giant Action Movie stars he converses with. Wondering too, how long this series will last. It's a little like the Life of Action books come to life. So now we all want to re-watch all of Dolph's movies, right?

Hell yes! I still remember what an impression he left on me the first time I saw him in A View To A Kill. Unforgettable, like when Tom Cruise appeared in Endless Love. Some people just have that thing.

Episode 14 | Dolph Lundgren (58:11)

Which Action Movie are You Waiting For? Me, Bond.
September 4, 2020

Bond 25: "In No Time To Die, Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology."  I've watched 10 seconds of the trailer but I really don't want to spoil it for myself. SO HARD not to watch. I am so ready to go back to the movies. I did watch the teaser . . . (song by Kully B & Gussy G "Boom Shot Dis")

I stumbled on this . . .

The Rolls Royce Vision is so Bond. I wish it would appear in a Bond movie.

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 13 Benny Urquidez
September 4, 2020

"Sensei Benny" aka Benny "The Jet" Urquidez has remained undefeated for more than 27 years, and remains the longest reigning World Champion of all professional sports. His kickboxing record is 63 wins, 0 losses (2 draws with 54 knockouts). He is an 8 time/5 weight division world kick-boxing champion. Fun fact: He wrestled professionally at New Japan Pro Wrestling Super Powers Clash in 1989 against Nobuya Azuka (from IMDb, more at Wikipedia).

From what he says, is there any more proof that fighters are born, not made than Benny Urquidez? It ran in his family. So many of these interviewees began martial arts at a very early age. He began at age 5!

Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever, are, in Scott's opinion, two of the best fight scenes ever. It's so clear that Benny is the real deal. Fighting Jackie Chan would be the top of anyone's career, or vice versa. They also cover Benny's work in Road House, and the fact that he's trained John Cusack for 29 years (who knew?!).

Episode 13 | Benny Urquidez (40:16)

"I took out my axe in the fifth round, I started chopping."
"To the dismay of the purists, this was the shape of things to come."

"You ARE The Blonde Fury!"

Cynthia Rothrock is so down to earth, "one tough son-of-a-gun, and a crazy person as well". Loved listening to her stories. What a life!! I also loved hearing Scott praise her. There's not many women to compare her to. Loved when she said: "I never ever looked at myself like 'You're a woman. You can't compete against the men. I always put myself on their level.' " :-)  We got to hear where her power comes from, and her training background and ethic. "I'm about strength, and speed, and power."

"Shooting the first movie in Hong Kong, prepared me for anything else in the world." LOL The culmination of all the previous episodes of Scott and his guests has created such a fun glimpse into the world of Hong Kong martial arts movies.  Loved her story about getting kicked in the groin. Also loved hearing that her signature move got named the "Scorpion Kick".

LOL When Scott says "Why am I doing this again?" It's really fascinating to hear them comparing notes, and what it means for them to talk as equals (actually Cynthia did more Hong Kong movies) in what they went through to make these movies. Scott is so in awe of this "white girl from Pennsylvania" and how unusual it is/was. She paid the moviemakers a great compliment in saying that they brought the best out in her. Plus she said she never said no to their ideas.

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 11 Richard Norton
August 27, 2020

Lifelong Martial Artist
It's so cool how Scott and Richard Norton never met but can talk like this. The Action Movie community seems to have such a great amount of genuine camaraderie. Imagine starting out training with Chuck Norris. Richard Norton's martial arts background is really interesting. Kick Boxing came up again (:-D) . . .

Okinawan weapons came up. I never imagined a group of weapons as varied as this would be grouped. Martial Arts has so many interesting parts and so much history.

"The Golden Age of Martial Arts Films"
The Octagon, Gymkata
(Kurt Thomas) . . .

On filming Twinkle, Twinkle, Lucky Stars (Sammo Kam-Bo Hung directed), it had a 3+ minute fight that took 3 weeks to film. They figured it out as they went ("I know no tougher film schedule than what it was like back then, with the hours, with the contact, with learning choreography in front of camera with not getting a change to rehearse." He said it was "almost full contact" (yikes), and they show him punching Sammo in the mouth!

"Sammo can punch like a mule and he's got an amazing spinning back kick."

On Acting "You can't teach that shit, mate."  LOL (-Richard)

On Cynthia Rothrock "I can't think of another female martial arts film actor that moves like she does. I mean, she's absolutely phenomenal." (-Scott) "I don't know anybody else that's come close to her." "She was very skilled. She could place a kick exactly where you wanted it to go. She was very strong, very powerful, you know, with her technique. I don't know anybody else that's come close to her." (-Richard)  "You don't get many girls that can kick with the power that she kicks with. Such force! You can see the speed and the power behind the way she does it." (-Scott) High praise indeed.

Wow! 6 and half weeks to film the main fight scene with Jackie Chan in The City Hunter. "I was just beating the daylights out of him. Richard's take on the humor in Mr. Nice Guy is a lot to his credit.

On Yojimbo and Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune "A fight scene is as much about what you're not doing, as what's you are doing." "Fights are not just action, they're a continuation of drama." (Says A Fistful of Dollars as a Western copy.)

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 10 Mark Dacascos
August 18, 2020

Action Freaks are thrilled with this choice. Mark Dacascos is a true talent. What an impressive body of work! Scott praises Mark's inspiration. It's fun to see all these Action Movies heroes giving each other some love. They have never met in person! Things to watch/re-watch: Crying Freeman, the butterfly twist in Only The Strong, Drive . . .

Melia Bernal Dacascos
So his mom was/is a bad ass! She competed against men. Mark makes a really important point about self defense (please listen for yourself), that cannot be overemphasized. The street fighting aspect is really cool. "If you take second place, you're still a loser", she said. LOL #goals He says he's a lover, not a fighter. All evidence to the contrary. He's got such a sweet face, though.

Influences
Enter The Dragon:
every Action Movie lover was influenced by this movie. He also mentions Jackie Chan, and after watching Jet Li in The Shaolin Temple, the moment he realized what he wanted to do (at least at that moment LOL). From IMdb he's "a mix of Japanese, Filipino, Spanish, Irish, and Chinese heritages". He speaks German (from living in Germany). Loved his realization about discipline. Watching this I'm realizing that every time I watched him, I was always so impressed with his skills. He makes a big on screen impact.

"There Will Be Pain"
Part of Drive reminds me of fights in The Transporter and Transporter 3. Mark Dacascos is a delight. I would love to see Scott Adkins work with him.

Episode 10 | Mark Dacascos (51:16)

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 9 Chad Stahelski
August 13, 2020

What an fascinating inside look at how Chad Stahelski works. John Wick, Matrix, and Rain/Ninja Assassin fans will be fascinated to hear the praise for what went into the skillset that makes these movies so great. The level of commitment really shows in the finished product! "If you're not doing dress rehearsals in real stuff, with the real props, you're not rehearsing."

Gunjitsu | The John Wick Way
Scott says he saw 87Eleven's "gunjitsu" style back in 2010 and ripped it off for El Gringo (2012). That's the thing about Scott. He's so good at everything he does, that everything he does is worth watching.  The same is true for 87Eleven. If they are involved you can be sure the Action will be out of hand!

SMH in spite of the success of the John Wick guys, Chad Stahelski says he still has to explain it. This video REALLY drives home how 'they' work and how someone who really knows Action works. He recognizes what's important and puts the money where it needs to be to make it look as good as it does. Not many people are anywhere close to his level. It really makes you want to rewatch all the John Wicks.  He says he did all the John Wicks in under 55 days. That's a testament to his prep ethic.

Even Halle Berry trained 5 months. 5 days a week, even with the dogs. He says he plays around at his Jiu-Jitsu gym with his own (smaller) dogs for fun. They even committed to adopting the dogs after (!).

Influences and the Real Deal
Chad Stahelski tributes his glass/reflection fetish to Moonraker's glass factory fight. What they did with VFX is mindblowing. What's clear is just how ARTISTIC Chad Stahelski's approach is and his love of film (not just Action), and dance, and martial arts, and drama. His influences include even childhood fights, which really drives home the gift he was clearly born with. It was interesting to hear him talk about putting reality back in to ground all the wild stuff. He mentions Transporter and Luc Besson :), and Conan (he has excellent taste). Is there any human who understands Action Movies more?!

"You just have to believe in it . . ."

Episode 9 | Chad Stahelski (1:02:32)

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 8 J.J. Perry
August 3, 2020

The "real kinetic impact" of this interview with JJ. Perry comes from his over-the-top enthusiasm, love of the genre, and praise for all his fellow collaborators. His personal history is super interesting. It was funny that he said when he realized he'd love to do stuntwork, he realized he was stuck in the Army. He has 147 films in his Stunts credits (for a frame of reference stunt legend Henry Kingi Sr. has 207 and he's 77, J.J. is only 55), that's a tremendous body of work! How many people can say they joined the Army as part of the "Elite Athlete Program"?! He didn't mention it (he's nothing if not humble), but he got a black belt at age 12.

OMG the clip they showed of Chad Stahelski with long (I mean LONG) black hair LOL. It does make him look sinister/tough. I particularly enjoyed the story of when J.J. met Tony Jaa and how Tony got the name "Hollywood". It's because it was so clear he's gonna be a star! Of Tony Jaa, Scott said "He's made of different atoms, that guy!" And J.J. said that both Tony and Scott are "genetically and physically on a different level", which anyone with eyes can see. SUCH talent!

I'm so loving this series. It really celebrates the work that goes into making Action Movies so good. Now I know who took the tumble for The Rock and Seann William Scott in The Rundown (LOVE that movie). It was Tanoai Reed and J.J. Perry. J.J. called Tanoai a "super, genetic freak of nature, big Samoan, cool, hard-as-nails cat".

"I didn't know that I could do these things until you forced me to do it." LOL

He's hilarious taking about Haywire. Gina Carano is a force of nature in that. To me, nobody keeps up with her in that movie. It's funny that Scott says how much he loves J.J. Perry's style (and Larnell Stovall) because the action is so "vicious". Gotta love that! Learned the lingo "Trickers".  I also found the discussion of Keanu's gun training super interesting.
Here's his lineup:

0:00 Martial Arts Background
03:40 Auditioning for Lionheart with Van Damme
05:15 Bloodsport 3
07:44 Mortal Kombat
11:50 The Rundown
14:52 Never need grow up
16:08 Undisputed 2
22:33 The evolution of Martial Arts cinema
31:28 Keanu Reeves
33:37 The Tournament
34:39 Wolverine X-Men Origins
36:19 Real stunts = Real danger
37:55 Gemini Man
39:10 Haywire
42:46 Fill the frame
44:39 Jackie Chan
46:44 Jason Statham
50:32 Oldboy
53:40 John Wick

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 7 Daniel Bernhardt
August 3, 2020

Daniel Bernhardt is a towering figure (literally 6' 3"—IMDB says 6' 2 3/4"—and figuratively) in Action Movies. I didn't realize that was him in The Matrix Reloaded (2003)! Maybe it was the sunglasses, but now it's clear . . . And how cool is that?! His first movie was Bloodsport 2 (1996), where he played Alex Cardo (as in wasn't only doing stunts). Since I didn't see Bloodsport: The Dark Kumite, The Matrix Reloaded would have been the first movie I saw him in. So, looking at this movies between 2003 and Parker in 2013, I'm not sure just how I came to worship his skills so much, but as Chad Stahelski told him "You're an Action Actor". Maybe it was these direct-to-video Action Movies: Future War (1997) opposite Robert Z'Dar, Black Sea Raid (1997), True Vengance (1997) with Miles O'Keeffe and Beverly Johnson, and Perfect Target (1997) with Robert Englund and Brian Thompson.

His career really took off after Parker. And these are just highlights: He did The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (same year), Knock 'em Dead, and who wasn't 'knocked out' by him in John Wick (2014)? He was in Logan and Atomic Blonde (2017), Escape Plan: The Extractors (2019), Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbes & Shaw (2019), Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (2020), and did 5 episodes of Altered Carbon (2018-2020). Super impressive!

And I didn't know he was Swiss. His accent came out just a little here and there (sounds a little like the Canadian accent). He heavily downplayed his martial arts training, but his work speaks for itself. Modeling led him to a TV commercial he did where he fought Jean-Claude Van Damme. This attracted the attention of Producer Marc Di Salle who cast as the lead in Bloodsport 2. And the rest is history, as they say. One really cool pattern in this series is how much praise these "action actors" have for their victims lol. The people they fight against, who help sell it and make it look real . . .

I really enjoyed his story about working on Parker. Don't want to spoil it for you if you haven't watched, but, owch!

Episode 7 | Daniel Bernhardt (57:32)

This series is amazing, and next up is J.J. Perry who I first heard of (saw) at ActionFest 2012 where he won the Stunt Coordinator of the Year award (he was on hand to accept, and was there the whole festival chatting with fans). They showed a video from Chuck Norris who said "nobody deserves it more". J.J. Perry seemed like a really gracious and truly nice person, and he thanked Mickey Gilbert for paving the way.

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 6 Loren Avedon
July 25, 2020

Really living for this series! So enjoyable to hear them talk about what it's like to make an Action Movie. Someone asked me on the Action Movie Freak Facebook page which martial art I liked. I think I was expected to say Muay Thai, but I like kickboxing and taekwondo, and it surprises me how often they come up when these Action Figures are asked what they studied and what their favorite is.

I love how Scott Adkins love of Action Movies comes through in his knowledge and appreciation for all elements of the genre. I had no idea Billy Blanks did any Action Movies (I will look for him next time I rewatch Tango and Cash, Time Bomb, Lionheart, or any of many others . . . I definitely have to watch King of the Kickboxers (which I have never seen). Looks like Thunderdome (5 years later).

Episode 6 | Loren Avedon (53:47)

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 5 Gareth Evans
July 19, 2020

This was really enjoyable, especially for his passion for Action Movies. There were many things I had to look up:

• Eggy (Eggy is when something annoys you, but not to the point of anger more just slightly frustrating -source)

Previz (Previsualization is the visualizing of complex scenes in a movie before filming. It is also a concept in still photography. Previsualization is used to describe techniques such as storyboarding, either in the form of charcoal sketches or in digital technology, in the planning and conceptualization of movie scenes. -Wikipedia)

Dit Guy (Digital Imaging Technicians support the camera team with technical and creative tasks with the digital camera. Their purpose is to ensure the best technical quality possible, as well as production safety. DITs are responsible for tasks during preparation, on-set time and post production. -Wikipedia)

• Jib/Jimmy Jib (The jib is an extension arm with a camera mounted on the tip. -video)

• Fig / Fig Rig Not sure this word . . .

• Panasonic 2 Camera (Merantau), Panasonic AF100 Camera (The Raid), Red Camera (Red Digital Cinema is the camera company that figured out how to make a digital camera feasible for Hollywood productions. -Wikipedia)

• M.I.A. Born Free "amazing music video" his influence for The Raid handheld feel. He makes a great point that the whole film should have the same style and not have just the action sequences be 'shaky'.

• Fig / Fig Rig (A handheld stabilization device for smaller film cameras/video cameras designed by film director Mike Figgis. The Fig Rig is made commercially by the Manfrotto Group. -Wikipedia)

Dutch Tilt (The Dutch angle, aka Dutch tilt, canted angle, or oblique angle, sets the camera so the horizon line of the shot is not parallel with the bottom of the camera frame. This produces a viewpoint of tilting one's head to the side. -Wikipedia)

• "Punchlines" He came up with this term for those moments of 'impact' in a fight scene that gets a rise out of the audience. You know, it's how you know you're an Action Movie Freak—those moments of levity at the extreme violence.

This was also a fascinating look at Action Design. "[We try] to maintain that sense of geographical space so that you're not lost in the movement of something. You're not, sort of, trying to figure out where are we in the room right now? You always want to know exactly where you are,and you know where the attack's coming from, and you know the relationship of that action with that space that you're in.  THIS IS HUGELY IMPORTANT and too often lacking in action sequences (super annoying too).

Episode 5 | Gareth Evans (54:19)

LOVE the big finish where Gareth STANDS UP FOR STUNTS.  #StandUpForStunts Sign the Petition!

The Art of Action Series: Ep. 4 Michael Jai White
July 14, 2020

Love listening to these Action Figures talk about Action Movies! Super entertaining to see their take on shared experiences and their interaction/friendship. Love that Michael Jai White thinks the fight between Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee in The Way of the Dragon according to MJW is the best fight scene. It has the most narrative that he's ever scene in a fight (about honor). Love, too, that this is such an insightful choice. Really shows what he knows about fighting. It was so enjoyable that I hated for it to end. It seems they cut it a bit short, but probably, they could have talked all day and Scott just want to keep it under 50 minutes.  Hope this series continues!

Episode 4 | Michael Jai White (48:32)

Scott Adkins' Exciting "The Art of Action" Series
July 10, 2020

Just discovered this series (already on episode 3) on YouTube. Scott's respect and admiration for fellow stars is great to watch and their love of the genre shines through. Now that I'm caught up, can't wait to see who's in the next episode.  Loved how Enter The Dragon, Yuen Woo-Ping ("he is he best" "Master"), and Sammo Hung kept coming up.

It starts off with what Scott Adkins calls his "the best fight I've ever done" against Marko Zaror in the always enjoyable Undisputed III: Redemption (2010), which is an amazing Fight Movie showcasing the talents of Larnell Stovall and Isaac Florentine, with a nod to J.J. Perry (it must be this stunt reel he mentions?).   So cool to hear how they pulled off so many real-looking moves and what really connected! lol

Episodes 1, 2, and 3 . . .

Episode 1 | Marko Zaror (37:19)

In Episode 2, Scott talks to his Ninja 2: Shadow of a Tear co-star Kane Kosugi about his training and his martial arts background and influences—they both love kicking things lol. (Kane Kosugi's father is the legendary Shō Kusugi.) They talk about other famous action stars (Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Jackie Chan) that they got to work with who impressed them. There is more praise in this episode for Isaac Florentine and his directorial style, and for Fight Choreographer and Stunt Coordinator Tim Man. This was the first time Scott worked with Tim but he says "Tim's become my go-to fight coordinator". Kane agrees "I don't think you can find anybody better." They breakdown the final fight in Ninja 2. Scott says it was his hardest film ever (he did 11 fight scenes with a back injury).

Episode 2 | Kane Kosugi (50:00)

Scott talks with Thai International martial arts phenomenon Tony "Hollywood" Jaa about his martial arts background, revealing how much Tony looked up to Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. He trained 8 hours a day in the beginning and ran 12 miles a day. Tony speaks about Panna Rittikrai ("the man behind" Tony Jaa) and about how he got into movie making.  Tony breaks down some of his most famous moves and reveals the inspiration for some of them. No wires, one take, it's all just as incredible in review as it was the first time you saw it. His timing and reflexes are astounding, and his vision because he comes up with these incredible moves himself. Makes me want to watch all the Ong Baks and Triple Threat again.

Episode 3 | Tony Jaa (54:32)

Bad Guys: Vile City Heavy on the Action!
March 16, 2020

박중훈 Bak Jung Hun in Bad Guys: Vile CityIt's been a while since I liked anything this much right off the bat, but Netflix's 나쁜 녀석들: 악의 도시 Nappeun Nyeoseokduel: Akui Doshi, literally Bad Guys: City of Evil aka Bad Guys: Vile City makes Training Day look like kindergarten. If you're not big on Korean movies or dramas, maybe this will make you a fan. It's a spin off of Bad Guys, which was also made into a movie of the same title, and like in the first show the cast is excellent!

Starring . . .

Park Joong-Hoon (박중훈 Bak Jung Hun) as Prosecutor Woo Je-Moon (reaching for the bat, below right) is ordered to take down a villainous business leader "Chairman Jo" Jo Yeong-Guk (played by 김홍파 Kim Hong Pa above at right) who controls Seowon City. Woo gathers a team of men (key players below) who may not be so clean themselves. Men who are emotionally invested in the outcome. If you really want to get the most out of this series, use the cheat sheet at the bottom and get to know the names. There are about 15 key players.

poster for Bad Guys: Vile City

Next is heartthrob 주진모 Ju Jin-mo (known for 사랑하는 은동아 Saranghaneun Eundong-a aka My Love Eun-dong—just my favorite) in the group photo above at bottom left, who has beefed up for this role of the total badass, Heo Il-hu aka "Mr. Heo." In real life, Joo Jin-mo is also know for, though his popularity appears untouched by, some scandalous text message conversations with another old-er famous Korean actor Jang Dong-gun  (Jang Dong-gun was the lead in The Warrior's Way, and I loved him in A Gentleman's Dignity—oh, the irony . . . ) that were published by hackers at the time of the JJY group chat scandal involving mainly Seungri (of kpop group Big Bang). Ju Jin-mo apologized publicly: "Even though his apology statement was released, people say that Ju humiliating and sexually objectifying women with his acquaintances has to be clarified as a separate issue from his hacked [text] messages." That quote is from this YouTuber's take (watch the video below) on what happened: "It looks like a conversation between two old men trying to look young and hip by using all these squiggly lines and LOLs." Ah, even though he's younger, I think the YouTuber's a little jealous. Ju Jin-mo and Jang Dong-gun are pretty much the shit for their age group in Korea (IMO), and maybe also So Ji-sub, but this is a big tangent. Anyhow, Ju Jin-mo makes the fighting look legit as his athleticism shows in all his moves (he does Taekwondo in real life). He's the guy that takes on the room full of men The Wild Wild West style (rest in peace Robert Conrad). There are many "Oh Shit!" moments that satisfy.

주진모 Ju Jin-mo in Bad Guys: Vile City

Anyway, Ju Jin-Mo is jacked, kickin' ass, and taking names. But, don't leave out 'the little guy'. Part of what I love so much about KDrama is the backstories on the characters. Just when you think you know what kind of person they are, you find out there's a really good reason for why they are the way they are. Take this character, for example, the mad dog Jang Seong-cheol (played by 양익준 Yang Ik-Jun):  "He's a real psycho. He has no goal in life. He lives because he's alive." When he's introduced, he comes off as a lowlife dick, but you soon learn to respect him. In real life, he starred in, wrote, directed, and won several awards for his movie Breathless. And just like it says in the trailer for Breathless, "A vicious man, but he will make you cry."

양익준 Yang Ik-Jun in Bad Guys: Vile City

Next is Kim Ji-soo, internationally known as just 지수 Ji Soo. He starred in JTBC's Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, which you should watch (he's so adorable it's hard to explain #swoonworthy), and, another Netflix K-Drama series I really liked: My First First Love). In BG:VC his rage fuels his fighting, and he's always showing up at clutch moments. Plus, he's indestrucible!

지수 Ji Soo in Bad Guys: Vile City

One of Korea's best actors has to be 죄귀ㅘ Choi Gwi-Hwa. His range is amazing. Loved him in Netflix's excellent Korean version of Suits, which contrasts greatly to this bad ass bad guy as he plays the #2 man to the villain "Chairman Jo" Ha Sang-Mo. Gwi-Hwa's character's strength also contrasts greatly to the character he played in Train to Busan (yes, that's him on the left, below with his head bowed).  As Ha Sang-Mo, Choi Gwi-Hwa's character may be the most complex, least predictable. Like all his roles, it's a nuanced, deep, and enjoyable performance.

죄귀ㅘ Choi Gwi-Hwa in Train to Busan

Here's the Train to Busan trailer, although if you've never seen it, I would recommend it as the best zombie movie ever, and a great movie overall. Just skip the trailer and do yourself a favor. You can watch the trailer after, and then watch the trailer for Train to Busan 2, called Peninsulaa (below). Think The Raid or The Raid: Redemption with zombies.

Each of the actors is memorable in his/her own way. I couldn't recommend this so highly if the performances weren't stellar, plus if you're a fan of KDrama, you will know many of these faces. Hats off to the writer as well, 한정훈 Han Jung-Hoon (Han Jeong-Hun). He also wrote Bad Guys and 2019's The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos (can't wait to see that). I could go on and on, but I don't want to get into spoilers. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  If you're a fan of 김민재 Kim Min Jae, he's in Peninsula.

Here is your cheat sheet (characters by last name alphabetically—I made this version), and below this, the cast courtesy of AsianWiki.com . . .

Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker
January 26, 2020

I was very late to see Star Wars, but so glad I did! It was a full circle kind of thing, and very emotional. You realize just how long you've been watching these movies because Harrison Ford is old now, and Carrie Fisher is gone. I tried not to have expectations, but I was in no way disappointed. Quite a bit of it was predictable, but I just tried to enjoy the ride. It delivered everything we like Star Wars movies for. I would say the wrecked Death Star was worth the whole movie. Even though we've gotten really spoiled with amazing CGI, it still took your breath away. I know mega fans will nitpick, but it's still a buffet. Shut up and eat your awesome (<--love that phrase, use it every chance I get and never get sick of it).

Bad Boys For Life
January 20, 2020

The best Bad Boys yet! We waited so long for it, I was afraid it would not be worth the wait, but it so was. An extremely enjoyable movie; love it when I want to watch it again right away. Also love that they set it up for more with a new team. Never can get over how beautiful Miami is in movies. It's even more stunning in real life. I thought the most impressive shot was the one they opened with here (and at 1:21):

The glamorous pool deck scene at night was shot at the spectacular Bentley Bay South Condominiums (Penthouse Villa B), which sits on the right hand side at the point when Alton Road meets 5th Street on South Beach as you turn right to leave the Beach and drive across the MacArthur Causeway toward Miami.  (daytime photo from Lucas Lechuga's website Miami Condo Investments  | he is still using the logo I bought/made for him, which was the first logo commission I ever got paid for as a graphic designer—nobody cares, right? LOL)

It was once the site of the Biscaya Hotel (also initially called The Floridian) where Al Capone stayed, and had a beautiful patio along the water that you approached by boat. When it fell into disrepair, it was a time when all anyone seemed to care about was Art Deco and it was Mediterranean style, so they couldn't see past the disrepair to appreciate the architecture. What a loss of history and an elegant landmark property. I was on the bridge the morning they imploded it as captured in this video. Many people were sad to see it go.

Netflix is 'On the Nose' with Michael Bay's 6 Underground
December 17, 2019

"With loneliness comes freedom to go where you please, do what you want."

Disney had good reason to be worried that Netflix got Michael Bay!  Michael Bay delivers a stunning Action Movie with an unparalleled opening 20 minutes. Within the space of that first 20 minutes, I had said "Holy shit!", "Oh my God!", "How did they do that?!" (twice), "Jesus!", and another two "Oh my Gods!". The killcount was at least 23 at that point and rated "R";, and that is awesome

I love when Action Movies introduce a team like players in, for example, The Rundown. I also liked the numbers-instead-of-names thing too.

6 Underground number one the billionaire

 "One" The Billionaire

played by Ryan Reynolds

  (10/23/76 age 43, 6' 2" born in Vancouver)

6 Underground number two the spy

 "Two" The Spy aka "Cami"

played by Mélanie Laurent

(2/21/83 age 36, 5' 2" born in Paris)

6 Underground number three the hitman

 "Three" The Hitman aka "Javier"

played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo

(2/25/81 age 38, 6' 2.5" born in Guadalajara))

6 Underground number four the skywalker

 "Four" The Skywalker aka "Billy"

played by  Ben Hardy

(skills: parkour, electronics)

(1/2/91 age 28, 5' 8.5" born in Bournemouth))

6 Underground number five the doctor

 "Five" The Doctor aka "Miliam?"

played by Adria Arjona

 (4/25/92 age 27, 5' 7" born in Puerto Rico

 "Seven" The Soldier/Sniper aka "Blaine"

played by Corey Hawkins

  (10/22/88 age 31, 6' 1" born in D.C.)

The movie begins like a Redbull Commercial in a Mission-Impossible-II-cliff-climber opening setting. The Netflix logline reads "After faking his death, a tech billionaire recruits a team of international operatives for a bold and bloody mission to take down a brutal dictator."  The movie introduces them and later gives us a little more on each. [SPOILER] One of them dies so they have to replace him.

The premise is all of them would rather be "dead" to the world so they can do good. As "One" puts it:  "Our job as ghosts is to do the dirty work the living can't, or won't." The group has a target hit board of 9 men. Target number one is the "first mission" (this movie). Does that mean we get 8 more movies?! I hope so.

Some things I loved about this movie were . . .

In the opening sequence, when One has to bail out of his aircraft to fake his death, in true Michael Bay fashion, the plane circles around him as he falls (must be seen to be appreciated).

6 Underground redbull crash

The "glorious clusterfuck" first chase scene in a 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (IMCDb.org) in "day-glow green" is something that not only showcases the skills of the team, but how they work, plan ahead for contingencies, get along. It's Michael Bay mayhem at its finest.

Right after a car full of bad guys gets T-boned by a (rig/oil truck?) and they bounce a pedestrian off the hood of the car, the second how-did-they-do-that sequence was this motorcyclist who takes a headshot and winds up on the hood of their car..

The third unbelievable stunt was this death-by-pipes impaling:

6 Underground bricks and pipes impaling

Then there was this guy who got caught between cars in the chase. Photos don't do it justice since it happens so quickly, the cyclist's body is just flung against the Maserati.  Seriously, HOW do they do that?!

The next gnarly kill was also hard to imagine how they did it..

6 Underground man dragged into excavator

The guy gets dragged. That part looks real/possible/incredible.

Once you see the excavator in the distance, you know what's going to happen.  As the bad guy (whose leg is stuck somehow in the car) gets swung all over the road, he is headed straight for the bucket.

How he flails about and moves his arms looks real, and this looks so painful but in this screencap, it shows it's a dummy.

He hits and gets thrown back 90 degrees (owch) . . .

And then there's the shoe . . .

Gnarly kills are best when it hurts to watch! On the heels of this death is another incredible scene. This is one hell of a chase sequence. We can see it coming, but Michael Bay really puts his mark on it. It's like the worst imaginable car crash movie that they show you in traffic school (yes, someone's been to traffic school more than once).

6 Underground car split in half

Here we see the car breaks in half.

And, of course, the passengers come flying out.

Somehow the driver's still inside and (it's hard to see here) gets something through his neck! Sweet! LOL

It's all Final-Destination-2 good, or maybe I should say Transformers-Dark-of-the-Moon good, because nothing I've seen since has topped the last 45 minutes of the eye-popping 3D of that movie!

Another how-did-they-do-that scene was this 'on the nose' shot through the window at high speed. It looked like tit took half his nose off in real time, but in these pictures, it just gets smooshed to the side.

6 Underground on the nose shot

In this crash, they 2 men in the car come crashing through the windshield. Then, the green car sideswipes them as they try to move. They are knocked into the air and thrown into the wooden slat wall below. Again, timing makes it look so real. I really think 2 stuntmen did this, just don't know how. Looked so real.

There's so many more incredible moments in this movie, but that first 20 minutes is packed!!!! The soundtrack is great and there is plenty of humor. This is BY NO MEANS all the crashes or kills, it's just my favorites.

Some critics complained there wasn't enough story. I think that just translates to they wanted more. You want more. Watch it yourself. The rest is just as good.

And "Two" is a total bad ass! #grrrlpower

At Last—Black Widow Movie
December 3, 2019

Black Widow 2020 movie poster

I thought for a while it wasn't going to get made, that they had given up. But, here's the trailer. Sounds like an excuse for her to kick ass. Super excited for the female stunt work on this.  Don't even care if it's a good movie, it's MARVEL!

"I Won't Be Back" Terminator: Dark Fate
November 13, 2019

So, YES, you need Arnold Schwarzenegger if it's a Terminator movie, BUT they don't get what made it cool in the first place: MUSCLE. I saw it in theatres when Arnold was a phenomenon. It was like "What's the big guy gonna do next?" "Oh, they turned him into a robotic killing machine—cool!". We were afraid of him BEFORE we found out he was a killing machine, but none of the Terminators have been scary since. Yes, they've been relentless and indestructible, but still ordinary-looking men/woman—meh!

And this was yet another Terminator movie that gave us only a glimpse of the battle we are all still waiting to see . . . How do they still not get that we want to see THAT movie?!

Terminator: Dark Fate answered a question you didn't want answered: "What would your Dad look like as The Terminator?" Not only did the robot 'become' human, but so did Arnold Schwarzenegger. And yet, he's the still best thing in it. Schwarzenegger humanizes the "Cyberdyne Systems Model 101" in the best/worst way possible.  If just his exterior 'skin' aged but his physique was the same, it would be different, but we are all too painfully aware our heroes are aging. You can't escape reality there and that knowledge/baggage made it suck for me. As he finally says, he won't be back . . . (I'm not crying, you are!)

There were amazing moments but they were just other versions of things we've seen before. Not original, like the "unscathed" moment the liquid metal Terminator stomps out of the burning semi wreckage, but another level version of that. It's the coolest moment in the film (what happens with the—I call him the "tar" version; tar is not scary—REV 9) when he explodes out of burning wreckage, but . . . it's still like this. This photo cold be high school, guess who's the nerd and who's the bully?

Diego Luna looking scrawny next to Arnold Schwarzenegger

As for the women, Linda Hamilton's character is made fun of IMO. The new Sarah Connor character doesn't have a son that will save the world, SHE will save the world. It feels like they just wanted to cast a Latina to attract a demographic (like the choice of Diego Luna). That's great, I'm all for diversity, but this girl is tiny. Again, where's the MUSCLE?! If you're going to have two other average women, bring on a super-bad-ass-beefy-augmented Super Soldier! But "Grace" is just tall. She would look more at home on the runway. I like her androgynous look, but I just don't get why another opportunity for a muscular Vasquez-from-Aliens type was lost.

Here's a character poster of the tiny and skinny chicks. ACTION MOVIE!!!! <--screaming in Gary Oldman as Stansfield in "Léon: The Professional" way. Where's the muscle? Women are fighting MMA and UFC! Isn't that proof enough, women want to see truly strong women?

New Action Movie Trailers
October 25, 2019

Maybe just new to me, but, here we go, here we go . . . As we all countdown to Terminator: Dark Fate (11/1), these look like the-real-deal Action Movies:

Primal  (8 November 2019)

First, let's start with Primal (of course) #becauseNicolasCage, but Kevin Durand might steal the show as the walking wall of villain. Famke Janssen plays (Army) Dr. Ellen Taylor. "A big-game hunter for zoos who has booked passage on a Greek shipping freighter with a fresh haul of exotic and deadly animals from the Amazon, including a rare white jaguar - along with a political assassin being extradited to the U.S in secret. Two days into the journey, the assassin escapes and releases the captive animals, throwing the ship into chaos." And I don't give a damn how fake the white jaguar looks. Rated "R" and it looks like it will have a High Killcount, lots of Gnarly Kills, and because Nicolas Cage, lots of Trash Talking.

Line of Duty  (No Release Date Yet)

This looks exciting (love when they "put a clock on it")! Aaron Eckhart in Line of Duty—"A disgraced cop finds himself in a race against time to find a kidnap victim whose abductor he accidently killed."—succinct. I see explosions, stunt driving, and in the vein of Heat (1995), a gun battle in the streets. Director Steven C. Miller's career speaks volumes for his passion for filmmaking as he hit the ground running (10 years to 'the big time'). He directed Escape Plan 2: Hades, First Kill (Bruce Willis, Hayden Christensen), Arsenal (Nicolas Cage, John Cusack), Marauders (Bruce Willis, Christopher Meloni, Dave Bautista), and Extraction (Bruce Willis, Gina Carano, Kellan Lutz).  No release date listed yett.

Bad Boys For Life  (17 January 2020)

And #becauseMIAMI (the Magic City always looks so pretty in movies, but it's even cooler in real life) Bad Boys For Life brings back the dynamic duo of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, in theatres January 17, 2020. Joe Pantoliano plays that stereotypical police captain (love that). He's been a favorite of mine since Midnight Run (1988) and The Fugitive (1993).

Bloodshot  (21 February 2020)

If you're a Vin Diesel fan, you're excited about this, if not, you're missing out as it looks like Vin does his version of RoboCop. For good or bad, two words: Man's man. Go see it. Bloodshot.  And P.S. Riddick fans, Furya has been announced.

6 Underground—Michael Bay on Netflix!
October 4, 2019

AdWeek ran a story that "Disney Will No Longer Run TV Ads From Rival Netflix on Its Entertainment Networks". I guess you must be #winning if you have Disney worried. And so they should be! Netflix has Michael Bay. His new Action Thriller 6 Underground starring Ryan Reynolds comes to Netflix on 12/13/2019, and true to Michael Bay's #shutupandeatyourawesome ways, the trailer looks FANTASTIC!
